A novel method to concurrently enhance heat conduction and natural convection inside PCM thermal buffer

Bin Ding et al.

Summary: This paper reported a novel composite phase change material (PCM) composed of low-melting-temperature alloy bars embedded in pure paraffin, which can improve thermal conductivity and natural convection during melting. The effects of heat flux, filling height, and alloy mass fraction on the transient temperature of electronic devices and the effective protection time of thermal buffer were experimentally discussed. The results demonstrated that the embedded alloy bars enhanced heat conduction in the first stage and the dripping of alloy droplets in the second stage enhanced natural convection and delayed surface temperature increase.

How natural convection affect cooling performance of PCM heat sink

Bin Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the quantified contribution of natural convection in phase change material (PCM) heat sinks, and discusses the effects of heat flux and physical parameters on temperature and safe working time. The results show that the cooling performance gradually shifts from heat conduction to natural convection during the temperature fluctuation stage. Natural convection can improve the heat dissipation performance, and correlations are established to predict natural convection under different heat flux conditions.

Shisong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermal performance of heat sinks using higher alcohol and higher alcohol/graphite foam as phase change materials (PCMs) by comparing their heating characteristics and equivalent thermal physical properties. The results showed that the PCM-based heat sink with graphite foam has an advantage in temperature control over the one with higher alcohol alone. The analysis of dimensionless experimental data provides a simplified reference method for engineering design and application of PCMs.
