Nonstandard continualization of 1D lattice with next-nearest interactions. Low order ODEs and enhanced prediction of the dispersive behavior

F. Gomez-Silva et al.

Summary: In this article, different standard and nonstandard continualization techniques are applied to a one-dimensional solid consisting of a chain of masses interacting with nearest and next-nearest neighbors through linear springs. The study focuses on the reliability of different continua in capturing the dispersive behavior of the discrete system, as well as their effect on the need for nonclassical boundary conditions and physical inconsistencies at short wavelengths. The Regularization method, used for a lattice with nearest interactions, presents advantages over the others.

Displacement-driven approach to nonlocal elasticity

Sansit Patnaik et al.

Summary: This study introduces a physically-consistent displacement-driven reformulation of nonlocal elasticity, ensuring that the (total) strain energy is a convex and positive-definite function without imposing constraints on the symmetry of the nonlocal kernel. The approach also satisfies the locality recovery condition and the laws of thermodynamics, showing consistency in numerical simulations.

Verification of asymptotic homogenization method developed for periodic architected materials in strain gradient continuum

Hua Yang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a computational approach for determining the constitutive parameters in strain gradient theory using asymptotic homogenization. The effectiveness and versatility of the proposed method are demonstrated through examples of epoxy carbon fiber composite, metal matrix composite, and aluminum foam. The influences of matrix volume fraction, stack of RVEs, and varying unit cell lengths on the identified parameters are investigated.

Gradient of mechanical properties in polymer nanocomposites: From atomistic scale to the strain gradient effective continuum

Hilal Reda et al.

Summary: It is important to accurately consider the polymer/NP interphase, which exhibits distinct mechanical properties, in glassy polymer nanocomposites (PNC). This study formulates a higher-gradient elasticity constitutive law for the interphase region using data from atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the interphase should be described as a strain gradient material, while the bulk material may still behave as a Cauchy material. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of PNCs and can guide the design of new materials with enhanced properties.

A nonlocality-based homogenization method for dynamics of metamaterials

Chaosheng Mei et al.

Summary: A nonlocality-based homogenization method and a corresponding framework for calibration of its nonlocal parameters are proposed for periodic metamaterials. The calibration of nonlocal parameters is realized through the analysis of both macroscopic and microscopic representative volume element of metamaterials with periodic boundary conditions. Numerical results show that nonlocal parameters are dispersive for metamaterials rather than constant as traditional nonlocal theories indicate. The proposed method accurately predicts the eigenfrequencies and band gaps of metamaterial structures in a higher frequency range.

A generalized integro-differential theory of nonlocal elasticity of n-Helmholtz type: part I-analytical formulation and thermodynamic framework

Dario De Domenico et al.

Summary: A generalized theory of nonlocal elasticity is presented, utilizing an integral type nonlocal formulation based on convolution products of attenuation functions. The theory establishes a higher-order constitutive relation between nonlocal stress and local strain and is supported by a suitable thermodynamic framework. Inspired by Eringen's models, the theory is denoted as a generalized nonlocal elasticity theory of n-Helmholtz type, with elegant expressions derived for both differential and integro-differential counterparts.

Extended stress gradient elastodynamics: Wave dispersion and micro-macro identification of parameters

Summary: The study develops an extended one-dimensional stress gradient model with additional inner-length and fourth-order space derivative, proving its dispersive properties and stability using Lagrangian formalism. Through two-scale asymptotic homogenization, it is shown that the high-order wave equation satisfied by the stress gradient model effectively describes heterogeneous materials.

A generalized integro-differential theory of nonlocal elasticity of n-Helmholtz type-part II: boundary-value problems in the one-dimensional case

Dario De Domenico et al.

Summary: This paper discusses a generalized theory of nonlocal elasticity of n-Helmholtz type, focusing on a specialized model for solving one-dimensional boundary-value problems. The paper derives higher-order nonstandard boundary conditions and applies them to statics and dynamics problems, analyzing a discrete lattice model with periodic microstructure. The nonlocal material parameters are identified by matching the dispersion curve of the discrete lattice model and comparisons in terms of attenuation function are presented.
