Redeposition layer formation caused by shading effect during sputter cleaning and associated damage on rake face of TiN coated high-speed steel drills

J. Kampichler et al.

Summary: The degradation of protective hard coatings has a negative impact on the performance of metalworking tools. This paper investigates the influence of the coating's chemistry, structure, and production steps on tool damage behavior. Specifically, the study focuses on the shading phenomenon on the rake face of high-speed steel drilling tools, which leads to various artifacts and negatively affects the wear behavior of the tool and the titanium nitride coating. The presence of a redeposition layer, caused by insufficient sputter cleaning, significantly lowers the adhesion of the TiN coating to the HSS substrate, resulting in delamination and diminished tool lifetime.

Summary: The present study investigates the thermal and mechanical tool loading of an indexed cutter with round cutting inserts. The finite element model helps establish the linkage between material damage in laboratory specimens and tool degradation in cutting experiments. The findings suggest that the investigated process conditions are close to the limit of safe tool application.

Interface mediated deformation and fracture of an elastic-plastic bimaterial system resolved by in situ transmission scanning electron microscopy

Markus Alfreider et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical deformation behavior of a WTi-Cu model interface commonly found in the micro-electronics industry using in situ transmission scanning electron microscopy. The interplay between plastic deformation and fracture processes under different loading modes is observed. The results provide fundamental insights into the failure behavior of elastic-plastic interfaces under different loading orientations.

Effect of substrate surface texture on adhesion performance of diamond coating

Zhao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study utilized texture technology to improve the adhesion of diamond coating to the substrate, with results indicating that an increase in micro-texture density enhances the adhesion of the coating-substrate system, while normal compressive stress at the edges of texture inhibits the propagation of cracks.

Mode dependent evaluation of fracture behaviour using cantilever bending

Nidhin George Mathews et al.

Summary: This study assesses the geometric factors affecting stress intensity factor solutions of a single edge notched cantilever bend specimen in different loading modes to propose suitable testing standards. The variation in stress intensity factor and mode mixity as a function of crack position, beam cross-section, crack geometry, arm length of the cantilever, and loading direction is analyzed to understand the contributions of different loading states and boundary conditions. Mode I predominates for beams with length to width ratios above 4, while mode II and mode III predominate for shorter beams of length to width ratio of 0.5 during cantilever bending.

Mechanism of adhesion failure during interrupted cutting with cemented carbide tools: Experimental and ab-initio perspective

Siyuan Gao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that adhesion failure of cemented carbide tools during interrupted cutting is mainly due to the reduced interfacial strength leading to fractures. Insufficient stability of the interface results in large-scale crack expansion in the material, causing it to detach from the workpiece surface.
