Encroachment by a better-informed manufacturer

Yang Tong et al.

Summary: Many manufacturers are using data analytics tools for better demand forecasting. This paper examines the consequences of encroachment when an upstream manufacturer has private access to demand information. The results show that encroachment by a better-informed manufacturer can lead to a lose-lose outcome and may discourage credible information sharing between supply chain parties. However, a greater degree of information asymmetry or higher direct selling costs can benefit both parties, while more accurate information may inhibit manufacturer encroachment.

Eliminate demand information disadvantage in a supplier encroachment supply chain with information acquisition

Jing Chen et al.

Summary: This paper examines the strategy of a manufacturer in obtaining information in a supply chain and proposes the design of an optimal contract that benefits both the manufacturer and the retailer. The study shows that the manufacturer can be negatively impacted by acquiring information, even with minimal costs, due to intensified competition between channels. Interestingly, the retailer can benefit from the manufacturer acquiring information. Additionally, the study finds that the retailer may be worse off from being the retail price leader when the manufacturer acquires demand information, leading to intensified price competition.

CSR investment for a two-sided platform: Network externality and risk aversion

Wanying Wei et al.

Summary: The business of two-sided platforms such as online ride-sharing has grown rapidly, but complying with CSR regulations is a challenge, especially on the supply side. This paper develops a game-theoretic model for a two-sided platform and analyzes the effects of network externalities and risk aversion on CSR investment decision-making. The results show that network externalities may not necessarily stimulate CSR investment, while risk aversion consistently encourages CSR investment.

Value of information with manufacturer encroachment

Huiqi Guan et al.

Summary: This study examines the value of information in a supply chain with the introduction of a direct-selling channel by the manufacturer. Different models are analyzed based on the information structure regarding the manufacturer's direct-selling cost, and by comparing firms' profits, the value of the manufacturer's information acquisition and sharing with the retailer is derived. The findings suggest that the manufacturer's information acquisition can have simultaneous benefits for both the manufacturer and the retailer, and supply competition can reverse the manufacturer's disincentive for information acquisition and facilitate information sharing.

Store brand introduction in a dual-channel supply chain: The roles of quality differentiation and power structure

Yujie Xiao et al.

Summary: This paper examines a dual-channel supply chain consisting of a manufacturer, a retailer, and a direct channel, focusing on whether the retailer introduces a store brand (SB) and how it impacts profitability. Game-theoretic models are developed to analyze the introduction incentive and power structure. The findings reveal that the retailer's introduction of the SB depends on the quality and inter-brand substitutability. Interestingly, increasing the retailer's power may not incentivize SB introduction.

The impact of retail pricing leadership under manufacturer encroachment

Xing Wan et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of retail pricing leadership on a manufacturer's decision to encroach and how manufacturer encroachment affects retailer profitability. The results show that retail pricing leadership significantly affects the encroachment decision if the manufacturer has a selling cost disadvantage in the direct channel. If the manufacturer can lead by setting the direct channel selling price first, it is more likely to encroach as long as the degree of consumer acceptance of the direct channel is greater than 1/2. The encroachment decision depends on the degree of consumer acceptance of the direct channel and the direct selling cost, regardless of whether the retailer or manufacturer sets the retail price first or they set prices simultaneously.

Jin Li et al.

Summary: Research suggests that in a dual channel model, decentralized encroachment outperforms centralized encroachment when the retailer utilizes strategic inventory, benefiting both the supplier and retailer. However, the impact of unit inventory holding cost on the retailer's benefits should be taken into consideration.

Supplier Encroachment with a Dual-Purpose Retailer

Ningning Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates how a dual-purpose corporation retailer pursuing profit and consumer surplus affects market competition and supplier strategies. Surprisingly, a dual-purpose retailer can deter supplier encroachment and earn higher profits, but may provide lower consumer surplus compared to for-profit retailers. The commitment to dual objectives can alter market dynamics and influence supplier behavior.

Supplier Encroachment with Multiple Retailers

Baoshan Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the supplier's encroachment incentive when distributing products through multiple retailers. It shows that the number of downstream retailers plays a crucial role in determining the supplier's encroachment incentive. When the number of downstream retailers exceeds a certain threshold, the effects of supplier encroachment become negative for the retailers.
