A thermodynamic framework for the additive manufacturing of crystallizing polymers. Part I: A theory that accounts for phase change, shrinkage, warpage and residual stress

P. Sreejith et al.

Summary: A rigorous, comprehensive, and thermodynamically consistent theory has been developed for the fused deposition modelling (FDM) of semi-crystalline polymers. The theory predicts residual stresses and warpage in the polymer part due to temperature-dependent specific volumes of each phase. It also treats the semi-crystalline polymer as a constrained mixture of multiple phases, where glass is considered a new phase.

Elaboration, Characterization and Modelling of Periodic Viscoelastic Sandwich Beams for Lightening and Vibration Damping

Thomas Huchard et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the design, characterization and modelling of sandwich structures with periodic and viscoelastic core. The study demonstrates that alternating two materials with specific viscoelastic properties in the core of the sandwich structure can create frequency ranges without any resonance peaks. Experimental validation of the numerical modeling parameters is also conducted.

Viscoelastic-viscoplastic modeling of epoxy based on transient network theory

Makoto Uchida et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strain rate- and temperature-dependent nonlinear mechanical behavior of glassy polymers using experimental and numerical methods. The effects of strain rate and temperature on the mechanical responses and strain field development of epoxy are evaluated experimentally. The study extends the transient network (TN) theory to represent the temperature- and strain rate-dependent mechanical behavior of the glassy polymer, showing consistent results with experimental data.

A generalised neo-Hookean strain energy function for application to the finite deformation of elastomers

Afshin Anssari-Benam et al.

Summary: The new model proposed for the finite deformation of incompressible elastomers is simple with only two parameters, mu and N, derived within the classical framework of statistical mechanics. It effectively captures the deformation behaviors of each elastomer specimen using a single set of parameter values and outperforms the celebrated Gent model in terms of fit. With its structural molecular basis, simplicity, small number of parameters, and capability to describe multiple deformation modes using a single set of values, the new model is recommended for elastomer deformation applications.

A thermomechanical and photochemical description of the phase change process in roll-to-roll nanoimprinting lithography

J. P. Gomez-Constante et al.

Summary: The paper develops a model to describe the phase change process of a viscoelastic fluid in a mold irradiated with Ultraviolet (UV) light in roll-to-roll nanoimprinting lithography. Constitutive equations for the phase change of a mixture of viscoelastic fluid and solid polymer constituents are derived using a thermomechanical approach. The model relates both thermomechanics and photochemistry to describe the phase change process.

An approach to assess the thermal aging effects on the coupling between inelasticity and network alteration in filled rubbers

Makram Chaabane et al.

Summary: This paper presents a constitutive model for predicting the durability of filled rubbers under aggressive environmental conditions. The model considers the thermally driven network degradation and the inelastic response of the material, showing the importance of inelastic effects on predicting long-term material response. The network alteration theory proposed in the paper accounts for chemical and physical changes in the rubber-filler material system.

A thermodynamic framework for additive manufacturing, using amorphous polymers, capable of predicting residual stress, warpage and shrinkage

P. Sreejith et al.

Summary: A thermodynamic framework has been developed to predict residual stresses and warping in a class of amorphous polymers used in FDM. The distribution of residual stresses is influenced by shrinkage during cooling, which is incorporated by introducing isotropic shrinkage. The solidification process of the melt is simulated by significantly increasing viscosity.

On the central role of the invariant I2 in nonlinear elasticity

Afshin Anssari-Benam et al.

Summary: The necessity of including I-2 in the strain energy function W of rubber-like materials is analyzed, and a plausible approach for its incorporation is devised based on experimental data and structural arguments. The resulting additive-type models of W (I-1, I-2) show significant improvement in predicting the mechanics of rubber-like materials compared to the generalised neo-Hookean models, highlighting the central role of I-2 in modeling the finite deformation of such materials.

Summary: This article presents a micromechanics-based model that accurately describes the mechanical properties of hydrogel-based nanocomposites and compares it to experimental data. The study analyzes the effects of loading conditions and internal network structures on hydrogel behavior, discusses the reinforcement and failure mechanisms of nanofillers, and explores the self-healing characteristics of hydrogel systems. Further research on the behavior of hydrogel systems under different biaxial loading conditions is also conducted to highlight the capabilities of the proposed model.

The nonlinear viscoelastic response of suspensions of rigid inclusions in rubber: I-Gaussian rubber with constant viscosity

Kamalendu Ghosh et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on the macroscopic viscoelastic response of suspensions of rigid inclusions in rubber under finite quasistatic deformations through numerical and analytical methods. Despite the constant viscosity of the rubber matrix, the suspensions were found to exhibit an effective nonlinear viscosity of shear-thinning type and short-range-memory behavior, guided by both asymptotic analytical results and numerical solutions.
