Enhanced superplasticity achieved by disclination-dislocation reactions in a fine-grained low-alloyed magnesium system

Min Zha et al.

Summary: Superplastic forming is crucial for producing complex-shaped components in Mg-alloys, especially in high-alloyed systems. However, stabilizing small grains and facilitating grain boundary sliding in low-alloyed systems is challenging due to insufficient precipitates. Through a unique design strategy involving solute segregation, an Mg-1Zn-0.2Ca-0.2Zr-0.1Ag (wt.%) alloy achieved ~450% superplastic strain by absorbing intragranular dislocations through stress-driven grain boundary migration mediated by disclination-dislocation reactions. This study provides insights into the relationship between microstructural defects evolution and strain accommodation during superplastic deformation, shedding light on the nature of superplasticity mechanism.

α-Mg/LPSO (Long-Period Stacking Ordered) phase interfaces as obstacles against dislocation slip in as-cast Mg-Zn-Y alloys

Tsuyoshi Mayama et al.

Summary: The influence of alpha-Mg/LPSO phase interfaces on the flow stress of as-cast Mg-Zn-Y alloys was experimentally and numerically evaluated. The results showed that the flow stresses of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with LPSO phase fractions ranging from 40 to 85% were higher than those of single phase alpha-Mg or LPSO alloys. Comparison between Mg-Zn-Y alloys and Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloys revealed that the flow stresses of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with LPSO phase fractions of 25 and 40% were insensitive to grain size, while the flow stress of alpha-Mg single-phase alloy showed clear grain size dependence. Crystal plasticity analysis successfully reproduced the observed stress-strain behavior, indicating that alpha-Mg/LPSO phase interfaces are effective obstacles against dislocation slip in two-phase Mg alloys containing LPSO phase.

Prominent role of multi-scale microstructural heterogeneities on superplastic deformation of a high solid solution Al-7Mg alloy

Min Zha et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the superplastic response of a high solid solution Al-7Mg alloy processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) under uniaxial tension. The study reveals that the evolution of microstructural heterogeneities can be regulated to favor superplastic deformation, achieving impressive elongation of approximately 523%. The high superplasticity is attributed to the cooperated mechanism of dislocation slip accommodated by continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and grain boundary sliding (GBS) during deformation.

Surprising increase in yield stress of Mg single crystal using long-period stacking ordered nanoplates

Koji Hagihara et al.

Summary: Ternary alloys containing long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase exhibit superior mechanical properties due to the strengthening effect of LPSO phase. The matrix Mg solid solution in Mg/LPSO two-phase alloy has different mechanical properties compared to pure Mg, with the formation of LPSO nanoplate contributing to high strength. The results suggest that new ultrahigh-strength Mg alloys with lower Zn and Y contents but comparable or superior mechanical properties are expected to be developed by controlling LPSO nanoplate microstructures.

Modelling dynamic recrystallisation in magnesium alloy AZ31

Kenneth J. Tam et al.

Summary: A dynamic recrystallisation (DRX) viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) model was developed in this study to predict the continuous DRX and twin-assisted DRX behavior within an AZ31 magnesium alloy at temperatures ranging from 25 degrees C to 200 degrees C. The model combines temperature sensitivity with a dislocation density hardening law and a composite twin grain model to predict the activated deformation modes and their influence on the DRX mechanism. Validation was done using experimental data on a hot-rolled AZ31 Mg alloy deformed at different temperatures under uniaxial tensile loads along different orientations. Additionally, a parametric study was conducted to explore the influence of grain size, dislocation density, and crystallographic orientation on DRX kinetics and material behavior.

Summary: Magnesium alloys can be strengthened through various methods such as dislocation accumulation, grain refinement, deformation twinning, and spinodal decomposition. The spinodal strengthened ultralightweight Mg alloy in this study achieves specific yield strengths surpassing almost every other engineering alloy, with lattice mismatch at the diffuse transition region between spinodal zones and matrix being the dominating factor for enhancing yield strength.
