Interpreting the effectiveness of antioxidants to increase the resilience of asphalt binders: A global interlaboratory study

Dheeraj Adwani et al.

Summary: The use of antioxidant additives in asphalt binders can help reduce aging and bring significant benefits to the asphalt industry. However, the effectiveness of these additives is influenced by the unique physicochemical interactions in each binder, making their application complex. Further research is needed to investigate the performance of these additives and understand the mechanisms behind their interactions with specific binder compositions.

Interaction between asphalt and mineral fillers and its correlation to mastics' viscoelasticity

Meng Guo et al.

Summary: This research investigates the influence of interaction between asphalt binder and mineral fillers on the performance of asphalt mastics, finding that increasing the polar components ratio of asphalt binder, raising the specific surface area of fillers, making the size composition of fillers finer or increasing temperature can all increase the interaction degree between asphalt binder and mineral fillers. By introducing a new parameter C to characterize the degree of interaction, the study analyzed the correlations between interaction and mastics' rheological properties at different temperatures, proposing linear relationship as an optimum type to represent the correlation between interaction degree and viscoelastic properties of asphalt mastic.

Investigation of anti-aging mechanism of multi-dimensional nanomaterials modified asphalt by FTIR, NMR and GPC

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the anti-aging properties of asphalt by adding multi-dimensional nanomaterials. The experiments showed that MDN can decrease the increase of softening point, viscosity aging index, and complex modulus aging index of asphalt, while increasing retained penetration and phase angle aging index.

Influence of anti-ageing compounds on rheological properties of bitumen

Yangming Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different anti-ageing compounds on bitumen, finding that certain combinations significantly improved oxidative stability and resistance to fatigue cracking. Rheological analysis showed AAC-modified bitumen samples exhibited non-Newtonian characteristics, and the addition of NaMMT nanofiller enhanced rutting resistance in aged bitumen samples compared to Irganox acid:furfural combination.

Evaluation of cracking susceptibility of Alaskan polymer modified asphalt binders using chemical and rheological indices

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: Asphalt pavement cracking, especially thermal cracking, is common in Alaska and other northern states. Rheological indices like the Glover-Rowe parameter and Delta Tc can potentially evaluate cracking susceptibility of asphalt binders. A study evaluated 13 plant-produced asphalt binders from Alaskan paving projects using chemical and rheological tests, finding that modified asphalt binders were less prone to oxidative aging but showed more negative Delta Tc values at long-term aging states. G-R parameter results indicated the studied Alaskan asphalt binders were not susceptible to cracking at long-term aging state.

Long-term photo oxidation aging investigation of temperature-regulating bitumen based on thermochromic principle

Zihao Chen et al.

Summary: Bitumen modified by reversible thermochromic microcapsules is an innovative and green paving material that can efficiently mitigate the urban heat island effect. Research shows that this material maintains stability during long-term UV radiation aging, and can slow down oxidation of the bitumen matrix to a certain extent.

Evaluation and characterization on the segregation and dispersion of anti-UV aging modifying agent in asphalt binder

Xiaolong Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that hindered amines light stabilizer (HALS) could effectively delay the ultraviolet aging behavior of asphalt material, but its uneven dispersibility in asphalt might limit its modification effect. By investigating the dispersion of HALS in asphalt samples and analyzing their physical properties, it was discovered that HALS was evenly dispersed in asphalt, but its dispersion difference could lead to variations in the characteristics of the asphalt material.

Rheological characterization of reversibility between aging and rejuvenation of common modified asphalt binders

Meng Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the reversibility between aging and rejuvenation of modified asphalt binder, using commercial rejuvenator, aromatic oil, and warm mix rejuvenator for rejuvenation tests. It was found that warm mix rejuvenator had the most significant rejuvenation effect on the viscoelastic properties of modified asphalt. By comparing parameters such as complex modulus and hardening index, the rejuvenation effects of different rejuvenators on modified asphalt were evaluated.

Average molecular structure models of unaged asphalt binder fractions

Meng Guo et al.

Summary: Asphalt binder is a complex compound with a diverse range of hydrocarbons, making it difficult to determine its accurate chemical structure. This study aimed to analyze the chemical composition of asphalt binder and establish an accurate molecular structure model. By separating unaged asphalt binder into four fractions and using a combination of analytical techniques, the study successfully calculated the average molecular structure using an improved Brown-Ladner method. The study also provided model molecular structures for each polar fraction for future molecular modeling and simulation studies.
