Photoacoustic nanodroplets for oxygen enhanced photodynamic therapy of cancer

Marvin Xavierselvan et al.

Summary: The research presented a unique theranostic approach using perfluorocarbon nanodroplets as a triple carrier for oxygen, photosensitizer, and indocyanine green to enhance image-guided PDT. This approach effectively addresses hypoxia in solid tumors, improving treatment outcomes by delivering sufficient photosensitizer for ROS generation. The in vivo studies showed higher treatment efficacy compared to a clinically available formulation, demonstrating its substantial potential for patient-specific photodynamic therapy-based treatments.

Recent trends of contrast agents in ultrasound imaging: a review of the classifications and applications

Ali Tarighatnia et al.

Summary: Ultrasound imaging is a frequently used diagnostic modality for visualizing different diseases, with advantages of real-time imaging, portability, low cost, and safety. Novel contrast agents have improved the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound imaging, enabling the detection of diseases at earlier stages. Selecting nanoparticles with appropriate structure and performance that can bind to the target is a powerful strategy for targeted imaging and early disease detection. The technical detection modes and quantitative analysis of ultrasound imaging are affected by disease diagnosis.

Pickering emulsion stabilized with fibrous nanocelluloses: Insight into fiber flexibility-emulsifying capacity relations

Yu Lu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that different types of nanocelluloses play various roles during emulsification, with flexible bacterial cellulose showing minimal emulsification capability, while semi-flexible cellulose nanofiber and rigid cellulose nanocrystal can effectively stabilize emulsions. The system stabilized by cellulose nanofiber is dominated by depletion effect, leading to the formation of droplet clusters easily, whereas the system stabilized by cellulose nanocrystal is characterized by the repulsive effect playing a more important role.

A Study on the Acoustic Response of Pickering Perfluoropentane Droplets in Different Media

Ksenia Loskutova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acoustic response of novel particle-stabilized perfluoropentane droplets in different conditions, including confined media. The results showed that the acoustic response of the droplets was related to the amplitude of the peak negative pressure, which decreased over time, and the imaging setup was able to differentiate between the droplets and surrounding tissue.

Measuring the Compressibility of Cellulose Nanofiber-Stabilized Microdroplets Using Acoustophoresis

Ksenia Loskutova et al.

Summary: In this study, the compressibility of droplets stabilized with cellulose nanofibers was estimated using acoustophoresis, showing a constant value across different droplet diameters. The results revealed a negative acoustic contrast factor for the droplets, indicating their relocation to pressure antinodes during ultrasonic actuation. The compressibility of the droplets was found to be higher than that of water but lower than that of pure perfluoropentane.

Summary: This study demonstrates the superior performance of perfluoropentane droplets with cellulose nanofibers (CNF) shells as ultrasound contrast agents and drug delivery vehicles, and establishes a theoretical model and parameter study on their acoustic behavior. The results show that the shell strongly influences the acoustic behavior of the droplets, and the resonance frequency mainly depends on the initial gas cavity radius.
