Alteration of Blood Oxidative Stress Status in Patients with Thoracic Aortic Dissection: A Pilot Study

Joel Pincemail et al.

Summary: A pilot study on patients with thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) revealed heightened systemic oxidative stress status (OSS), characterized by decreased levels of antioxidants and increased inflammatory markers. Larger studies are needed to further characterize and interpret the consequences of oxidative stress in TAD disease.

Selenoprotein P - Selenium transport protein, enzyme and biomarker of selenium status

Lutz Schomburg

Summary: The habitual intake of selenium varies across the world, putting many people at risk of selenium deficiency and related health risks. SELENOP plays an important role in selenium transport to vital organs, such as endocrine glands and the brain. SELENOP deficiency is associated with health risks, and circulating SELENOP concentrations serve as a biomarker of selenium supply. SELENOP may have enzymatic activity and protective functions, but its role in the intact organism is still unclear. SELENOP-dependent selenium transport is an important and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular and critical diseases, cancer, and autoimmune thyroiditis.

Estimation of Selected Minerals in Aortic Aneurysms-Impaired Ratio of Zinc to Lead May Predispose?

Katarzyna Socha et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the levels of copper, zinc, selenium, cadmium, and lead in the tissue of patients with aortic aneurysms. Differences in concentrations of these elements were observed among different types of aneurysms, with implications that oxidative stress and inflammatory processes may play significant roles in the development of certain types of aneurysms.

The Impact of Selenium Deficiency on Cardiovascular Function

Briana K. Shimada et al.

Summary: Selenium is an essential trace element crucial for cardiovascular health through its incorporation into selenoproteins, which are key to maintaining proper cardiovascular function. Deficiency in selenium can lead to various cardiovascular diseases, and selenium may potentially serve as a complementary therapy for prevention or treatment of cardiovascular disease by interacting with microRNAs.

Thioredoxin reductase inhibitors: updated patent review (2017-present)

Evgeny Chupakhin et al.

Summary: Thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) is a selenocysteine-containing enzyme responsible for maintaining redox balance in cells, with potential applications beyond cancer research. This review focuses on recent developments in TrxR inhibitors, including traditional classes and emerging nitro (hetero)aromatic compounds. While progress is slow, new approaches like Michael acceptors and dual compounds show promise, though the future of nitro (hetero)aromatic chemotypes remains uncertain.
