Management of Obesity and Obesity-Related Disorders: From Stem Cells and Epigenetics to Its Treatment

Sara Cruciani et al.

Summary: Obesity is a complex disease that involves abnormal or excessive fat accumulation. It is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, aging, lifestyle, and diets. Adipogenesis, the process of fat cell formation, is regulated by various mechanisms. However, excessive fat growth can lead to dysfunctional adipose tissue, inflammation, and insulin resistance. This review discusses the mechanisms involved in adipogenesis and current therapeutic strategies for obesity and related metabolic syndrome.

Overview of Curcumin and Piperine Effects on Glucose Metabolism: The Case of an Insulinoma Patient's Loss of Consciousness

Simona Servida et al.

Summary: This article discusses a case study of a helicopter pilot who experienced transient loss of consciousness during a low-altitude flight under curcumin and piperine treatment. Further investigation revealed the presence of previously asymptomatic insulinoma. The researchers hypothesize that the combined effects of curcumin and piperine may have caused severe hypoglycemia and subsequent loss of consciousness. Thus, more studies are needed to evaluate the safety of curcumin and piperine supplementation in individuals with impaired glucose metabolism and insulin secretion.

An Early and Sustained Inflammatory State Induces Muscle Changes and Establishes Obesogenic Characteristics in Wistar Rats Exposed to the MSG-Induced Obesity Model

Matheus Felipe Zazula et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the early and chronic effects of MSG induction of obesity upon systemic and muscular parameters of Wistar rats. The results showed that early exposure to MSG led to growth retardation, increased adiposity, hyperinsulinemia, and inflammation. In adulthood, peripheral insulin resistance, increased fibrosis, oxidative distress, and reduced muscle mass, oxidative capacity, and neuromuscular junctions were observed, indicating that the metabolic damage established early on had a long-lasting impact.

Analysis of Selected Salivary Adipokines and Cytokines in Patients with Obesity-A Pilot Study

Lucyna Ostrowska et al.

Summary: Obesity is a chronic disease that has negative impacts on health, society, and the economy. A study was conducted to analyze the concentrations of proinflammatory parameters in the saliva of obese and normal weight individuals. The results showed higher concentrations of certain proinflammatory adipokines and cytokines in the saliva of obese individuals compared to those with normal body weight, with variations observed between genders. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and understand the underlying mechanisms of metabolic complications associated with obesity in different genders.

Adipose Tissue Fibrosis in Obesity: Etiology and Challenges

Genevieve Marcelin et al.

Summary: Obesity is a chronic and progressive condition that affects whole-body energy balance and is linked to the development of comorbidities. Fibrotic adipose tissue caused by obesity can lead to metabolic dysfunctions such as insulin resistance. Targeting inflammation or fibrosis deposition may help improve insulin resistance and glucose homeostasis in individuals with obesity.

Adipose-tissue plasticity in health and disease

Alexander Sakers et al.

Summary: Adipose tissue, known as fat, plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological aspects of the body. Its high plasticity allows for significant changes in metabolism, structure, and phenotype in response to physiological stimuli. Limitations in this plasticity contribute to decreased or aberrant responses to physiological cues, leading to the progression of cardiometabolic disease.

Adipose tissue inflammation and metabolic dysfunction in obesity

Tatsuo Kawai et al.

Summary: Chronic low-grade inflammation of adipose tissue is linked to metabolic disease and organ complications, mainly caused by the secretion of inflammatory substances by adipocytes and infiltration of immune cells. Despite being low-grade, this inflammation negatively impacts remote organ function and is considered a causative factor of obesity-related complications.
