Inhibitory Effects of Ursolic Acid on the Stemness and Progression of Human Breast Cancer Cells by Modulating Argonaute-2

Wen-Ling Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that ursolic acid (UA) inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer cells and reduces the proportion of cancer stem cells (CSCs). UA alters the invasion and migration capacities of cancer cells by regulating the expression levels of stemness biomarkers and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) proteins. Furthermore, UA decreases the levels of oncogenic miRNAs by down-modulating AGO2 in breast cancer cells. These findings suggest that UA has potential in improving the clinical practice of breast cancer by interrupting EMT programming and targeting CSCs.

Chemotherapy Side-Effects: Not All DNA Damage Is Equal

Winnie M. C. van den Boogaard et al.

Summary: Recent advances in cancer treatment have increased survival rates, but the negative lasting effects of treatment can lead to accelerated aging in cancer survivors. Chemotherapeutic drugs target and damage DNA, causing mutations and genome instability, which can affect cell cycle, differentiation status, and cellular micro-environment, ultimately influencing the outcomes of cancer treatment.

Current and future burden of breast cancer: Global statistics for 2020 and 2040

Melina Arnold et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with over 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020. There is significant geographic variation in incidence rates, with lower rates in some Asian and African countries and higher rates in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Northern America, and parts of Europe. Mortality rates show less variation, but transitioning countries still bear a disproportionate burden of breast cancer deaths. By 2040, the burden of breast cancer is predicted to increase further due to population growth and ageing. Global efforts are needed to address this growing burden, especially in transitioning countries where incidence rates are rising rapidly and mortality rates remain high.

Ursolic Acid Derivative UA232 Promotes Tumor Cell Apoptosis by Inducing Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Lysosomal Dysfunction

Wenfeng Gou et al.

Summary: UA232, a derivative of ursolic acid, demonstrates anti-tumor effects against breast and cervical cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and promoting autophagy. The compound exerts its pharmacological effects through triggering endoplasmic reticulum stress and lysosomal dysfunction, making it a promising candidate for cancer treatment.

Natural Compounds in Sex Hormone-Dependent Cancers: The Role of Triterpenes as Therapeutic Agents

Codruta Soica et al.

Summary: Sex hormone-dependent cancers play a significant role in global cancer-related deaths, with research into their molecular mechanisms being crucial but also potentially leading to more aggressive relapses. The interaction of hormones with receptors is key in the development and progression of cancer, with treatment options evolving but still facing shortcomings.

Autophagy Modulators in Cancer Therapy

Kamila Buzun et al.

Summary: Autophagy is a self-degradation process that plays a crucial role in cell survival under stressful conditions. Recent research has focused on understanding the different types and mechanisms of autophagy, as well as the relationship between autophagy and apoptosis. Intensive studies have identified novel compounds with anticancer activity that can modulate autophagy pathways.

Ursolic Acid Inhibits Breast Cancer Metastasis by Suppressing Glycolytic Metabolism via Activating SP1/Caveolin-1 Signaling

Shengqi Wang et al.

Summary: Research suggests that ursolic acid is the most potent anti-breast cancer compound in Oldenlandia diffusa. Ursolic acid can suppress the growth of breast cancer cells by affecting cell metabolism, without showing hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, or hematotoxicity in in vivo experiments.

Agnieszka Gornowicz et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the combination of etoposide with anti-HER2 antibodies did not show cytotoxic effects on breast cancer cells, but decreased viability and DNA biosynthesis in gastric cancer cells, inducing programmed cell death via apoptotic pathways in AGS gastric cancer cells.
