Controlled human exposure to diesel exhaust: results illuminate health effects of traffic-related air pollution and inform future directions

Erin Long et al.

Summary: Air pollution has globally relevant impacts on health, and controlled human exposure studies have helped to investigate these effects. Diesel exhaust experiments have shown that traffic-related air pollution has detrimental effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, primarily through oxidative stress. The interactions between pollution and other environmental factors should be considered.

Influence of waste oil-biodiesel on toxic pollutants from marine engine coupled with emission reduction measures at various loads

Abdulfatah Abdu Yusuf et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the use of biodiesel in marine diesel engines with high-efficiency post-treatment devices can effectively reduce the emission levels of toxic pollutants, especially when it comes to unregulated emissions. While regulated gaseous emissions generally met standard limits, there was an issue with CO emission at idle mode. In unregulated emissions, PM2.5 species were dominated by OC.

Toxicity of different biodiesel exhausts in primary human airway epithelial cells grown at air-liquid interface

Katherine R. Landwehr et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the toxicological properties of biodiesel exhausts created from different feedstocks. The research found that biodiesel exhausts made from different feedstocks have varying toxic effects on human airway epithelial cells. Tallow biodiesel was found to be the most toxic fuel, while Canola biodiesel had the least toxic effects.

Mouse Lung Structure and Function after Long-Term Exposure to an Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Level Predicted by Climate Change Modeling

Alexander N. Larcombe et al.

Summary: This study shows for the first time that long-term exposure to environmentally relevant levels of CO2 can impact respiratory function in mice, particularly in female mice. Importantly, it suggests that the early life period, when lungs are undergoing rapid growth and development, is particularly sensitive to CO2.

Critical Review of Diesel Exhaust Exposure Health Impact Research Relevant to Occupational Settings: Are We Controlling the Wrong Pollutants?

Katherine R. Landwehr et al.

Summary: Exposure to diesel exhaust from both older and newer technology engines negatively impacts the lungs, heart, and brain. Individuals with asthma, allergies, or respiratory diseases are more vulnerable to these effects compared to healthy individuals. Current occupational exposure limits for diesel exhaust particles and elemental carbon may need to be adjusted to mitigate health risks.

Fuel feedstock determines biodiesel exhaust toxicity in a human airway epithelial cell exposure model

Katherine R. Landwehr et al.

Summary: This study compared the health impacts of exhaust from biodiesels made from different feedstocks, with Tallow biodiesel showing the highest toxicity and Canola biodiesel the lowest. Different exhausts result in a spectrum of toxic effects in vitro when combusted under identical conditions.

In Vitro primary human airway epithelial whole exhaust exposure

Katherine R. Landwehr et al.

Summary: This article describes a customized exhaust exposure method using reprogrammed primary human airway epithelial cells, which has been successfully used to assess the effects of multiple biodiesel exposures. The method can be adapted for other engine exhaust exposures or potentially other respirable environmental exposures, and involves using exhaust from a diesel engine equipped with EURO VI after treatment devices diluted with air for real-world exposure concentrations.
