Serum TSH as a predictor of malignancy in indeterminate thyroid nodules

A. Amado et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels as a predictor of malignancy in cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules. The results showed that higher TSH levels were associated with an increased risk of thyroid carcinoma in these nodules. TSH can be a fundamental diagnostic tool in stratifying the risk of malignancy and assisting in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to these nodules.

Predictive Factors Indicative of Hemithyroidectomy and Close Follow-Up versus Bilateral Total Thyroidectomy for Aggressive Variants of Papillary Thyroid Cancer

In A. Lee et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the need for additional surgical treatment in patients diagnosed with aggressive variants of papillary thyroid cancer after lobectomy. The study analyzed 249 patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy or bilateral total thyroidectomy for aggressive variants of papillary thyroid cancer. The results suggested that close follow-up may be performed without additional surgical treatment in low-risk patients incidentally detected after hemithyroidectomy. The presence of palpable tumor, clinical N1b, tumor size, gross extrathyroidal extension, and advanced pathological stages were associated with an increased risk of recurrence.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of thyroid nodules and found a high prevalence of cancer among ITNs, which were divided into low-risk and high-risk categories. Additionally, the study sample size significantly influenced the cancer rate.

Combining the American Thyroid Association's Ultrasound Classification with Cytological Subcategorization Improves the Assessment of Malignancy Risk in Indeterminate Thyroid Nodules

Aline Machado Larcher de Almeida et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the cancer risk of indeterminate thyroid nodules by considering both cytological subcategories and the American Thyroid Association (ATA)-based US risk classification. The highest RoM was related to nuclear atypia (NA) and both architectural and nuclear atypia (ANA) subcategories, while architectural atypia (AA) and oncocytic pattern (OP) had lower RoM. NA and ANA were independently associated with cancer, as were high and intermediate-risk US categories according to ATA. The presence of NA or ANA combined with intermediate US patterns had high RoM values, and combining cytological features with high-risk US categories resulted in RoM exceeding 70%.

Real-life use of BRAF-V600E mutation analysis in thyroid nodule fine needle aspiration: consequences on clinical decision-making

Giulia Brigante et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the real-life use of BRAF-V600E mutation analysis in washout liquid from thyroid nodule fine needle aspiration and its consequences on clinical decision-making. The analysis showed high specificity but low sensitivity, with mutant results leading to more extensive surgery and increased risk of hypoparathyroidism.
