Direct air capture (DAC) and sequestration of CO2: Dramatic effect of coordinated Cu(II) onto a chelating weak base ion exchanger

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: Direct air capture (DAC) is essential for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. A hybrid sorbent with polyamine-Cu(II) complex is presented, enabling over 5.0 mol of CO2 capture/kg sorbent, significantly higher than most DAC sorbents reported. The sorbent can be thermally desorbed at low temperatures and seawater can be used as a regenerant, simultaneously sequestering the desorbed CO2 as harmless alkalinity.

Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE)-Preparing for human Mars exploration

Jeffrey A. Hoffman et al.

Summary: MOXIE is a demonstration of in-situ resource utilization on Mars, producing oxygen through solid oxide electrolysis. A scaled-up MOXIE could provide the necessary oxygen for transporting astronauts off the Martian surface. MOXIE has produced oxygen seven times and will continue to demonstrate oxygen production throughout all Martian seasons.

Thermochemical solar-driven reduction of CO2 into separate streams of CO and O2 via an isothermal oxygen-conducting ceria membrane reactor

Stephane Abanades et al.

Summary: CO2 single-step thermolysis was achieved using oxygen permeable MIEC membranes made of ceria for separate production of CO and O-2. Concentrated solar energy was used as a renewable thermal energy source, combined with a chemical potential gradient to drive the CO2 dissociation reaction. Continuous oxygen transfer across the membrane was achieved, and a novel solar chemical reactor design integrating a reactive ceria membrane was successfully demonstrated under real concentrated solar radiation, resulting in stable and unprecedented CO production rates.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO using solid oxide electrolysis cells with high-performance Ta-doped bismuth strontium ferrite air electrode

Yifeng Zheng et al.

Summary: Doping Ta into Bi0.5Sr0.5FeO3-δ perovskite can significantly reduce the polarization resistance of air electrodes in solid-oxide electrolysis cells for CO2 reduction, leading to improved electrical efficiency. The modified air electrode, in combination with a Ni-YSZ anode, demonstrates satisfactory electrolysis performance and stability, indicating its potential application in CO2 reduction technique.
