The development of microfluidic-based western blotting: Technical advances and future perspectives

Christopher T. Desire et al.

Summary: Significant technical advancements have been made in the field of western blotting through the use of microfluidic technologies over the past two decades. This review provides a critical overview of these advancements, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. The development of commercially available systems, including those for single cell analysis, is highlighted. The review also covers recent developments such as automation algorithms, different materials/chemistries, projection electrophoresis, and triBlots, as well as the potential of these systems for point-of-care devices in healthcare.

Dissecting the role of protein phosphorylation: a chemical biology toolbox

Tim Bilbrough et al.

Summary: Protein phosphorylation is a crucial regulator of protein and cellular function. The role of most phosphorylation sites is still unclear. Chemical and chemoenzymatic synthesis provides valuable tools to access previously unreachable phosphoforms of proteins. This review discusses important tools and provides examples of their application to biological questions.

Automated Western immunoblotting detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 serum antibodies

Sophie Edouard et al.

Summary: ELISA and chemiluminescence serological assays for COVID-19 currently focus on one or two SARS-CoV-2 antigens, while an automated Western immunoblotting was developed as a complementary serologic assay, using an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 lineage 20a strain as the antigen source. The automated Western immunoblotting showed substantial agreement (90%) with the compared ELISA, with a sensitivity of 94% and a specificity of 93%, particularly in samples collected more than 2 weeks after symptom onset.

Ochratoxin A Induces Oxidative Stress in HepG2 Cells by Impairing the Gene Expression of Antioxidant Enzymes

Enrique Garcia-Perez et al.

Summary: Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin found in foods that can cause oxidative stress, leading to cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells, including an increase in ROS and a depletion of GSH. Additionally, OTA downregulates the mRNA level of catalase (CAT) and decreases CAT enzymatic activity in a dose-dependent manner.
