Multifunctional magnetic Fe3O4/Cu2O-Ag nanocomposites with high sensitivity for SERS detection and efficient visible light-driven photocatalytic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Jie Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel multifunctional nanocomposites (NCs) were developed for ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection and visible light-driven photocatalytic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The NCs exhibited excellent SERS sensitivity attributed to the synergistic interplay of electromagnetic and chemical enhancement. The optimal SERS substrates showed low limits of detection for various PAHs and could effectively detect PAHs in actual soil environment. Additionally, a simple SERS method was used to monitor the photocatalytic process of PAHs. The magnetic multifunctional NCs allowed for the recovery and reuse, maintaining their outstanding SERS and photocatalytic performance even after eight cycles. This study provides a unique idea for integrating ultrasensitive SERS detection and efficient photocatalytic degradation of PAHs, with promising prospects in environmental protection.

Global trade drives transboundary transfer of the health impacts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emissions

Ruifei Li et al.

Summary: International trade leads to a redistribution of pollutant emissions related to the production of goods and services and subsequently affects their severe health impacts. This study assessed emissions and health impacts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), a carcinogenic byproduct of production activities, and considered the various stages of the global supply chain. The findings indicate that trade plays a greater role in driving the health risks associated with PAH than in driving the emissions, highlighting the need for international cooperation to mitigate PAH emissions and health impacts.
