Seasonal variation of alkaloids and polyphenol in Ephedra sinica cultivated in Japan and controlling factors

Yoshitomi Kudo et al.

Summary: We investigated the seasonal variation of alkaloids, polyphenols, and sugar contents in Ephedra sinica cultivated in Japan, and found that they were influenced by precipitation and tissue development. Alkaloids and polyphenols increased from May to July and decreased in October, while sugar content continued to increase until September and decreased in November. The development of vascular bundles and fibers, as well as the increase in herbal stem weight, occurred from August to October. It was also observed that the seasonal variation of alkaloids and polyphenols was opposite to the seasonal variation of sugar content.

Alternative Splicing and Its Roles in Plant Metabolism

Pui Ying Lam et al.

Summary: Plant metabolism plays a crucial role in plant survival, growth, development, and interaction with the environment. It is tightly regulated at transcriptional, post-transcriptional, translational, and post-translational levels in response to different growth stages and changing environment. Alternative splicing, a post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism, generates multiple protein isoforms from a single gene and regulates plant metabolism by altering biochemical activities, protein interactions, and subcellular localization.

Biosynthesis of alkaloids in Amaryllidaceae plants: a review

Isabel Desgagne-Penix

Summary: Amaryllidaceae alkaloids are a group of specialized metabolites primarily found in the Amaryllidaceae plant family, with over 600 naturally occurring varieties identified, including galanthamine used to treat neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease. Limited commercial availability hinders their clinical development despite promising pharmacological potential. There have been significant advancements in understanding the biosynthesis of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids in recent years through comparative transcriptomic and biochemical approaches.

Proteomic analysis provides an insight into the molecular mechanism of development and flowering in Lycoris radiata

Xueru Jiang et al.

Summary: Lycoris radiata Herb is an important ornamental and medicinal plant native to China with separate productive and reproductive phases. A label-free quantitative proteomic approach was used to study the proteome changes in bulb tips at different developmental stages. The findings revealed temperature stimuli, stress responses, and immune responses during dormancy and flowering stages, along with protein involvement in protein synthesis and cell expansion.

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Identifies Key Regulatory Genes Involved in Anthocyanin Metabolism During Flower Development in Lycoris radiata

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified key differentially expressed genes in Lycoris petals during flower development and explored their correlation with anthocyanin content. Through KEGG enrichment analysis, these genes were classified and structural genes and transcription factor genes involved in anthocyanin accumulation were discovered. The important structural gene LrDFR1 showed a positive correlation in expression levels during flower development and acted as a key gene in the anthocyanin metabolism network.
