Chitosan-based carbon nitride-polydopamine-silver composite dressing with antibacterial properties for wound healing

Chennan Liu et al.

Summary: The development of a new type of dressing to combat bacterial resistance is of great importance. A carbon nitride-polydopamine-silver complex (C3N4-PDA-Ag) was prepared using C3N4 and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to achieve a synergistic antimicrobial effect. The C3N4-PDA-Ag complex was further modified with chitosan (CS) to form a C3N4-PDA-Ag@CS film. The results showed that the C3N4-PDA-Ag@CS film exhibited superior antibacterial activity and biocompatibility, and promoted wound healing in infected mice.

Mesoporous Polydopamine Nanobowls Toward Combined Chemo- and Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Shahinur Acter et al.

Summary: This study explores a new approach for targeted cancer treatment by combining chemo- and photothermal therapy using bio-derived polydopamine (PDA) mesoporous nanobowls, which possess exceptional biocompatibility. The results demonstrate that loading the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) into the nanobowls and treating with near-infrared (NIR) illumination significantly enhances pharmaceutical cytotoxicity to cancer cells compared to free DOX. Additionally, combining the DOX loaded nanobowls with photothermal treatment results in nearly 100% cell death. This research highlights the potential of PDA mesoporous nanobowls as a scaffold for combined chemo- and photothermal therapy, offering new opportunities for treating advanced cancer.

Polydopamine at biological interfaces

Maria Laura Alfieri et al.

Summary: In recent years, the coating of surfaces with dopamine or other catecholamines in oxidative conditions to produce polydopamine films has become a popular method. Polydopamine not only serves as a coating, but also has a rich chemistry that allows interactions with biomolecules through either covalent or non-covalent bonds, forming particles, membranes, and other assemblies. This review describes the latest advances in the design of composites between polydopamine and related eumelanin-like materials with biomolecules such as proteins, nucleotides, oligosaccharides, and lipid assemblies, as well as the interactions between polydopamine and living cells.

Summary: Recent advancements in nanotechnology have significantly advanced the development of drug delivery systems in nanomedicine, with a focus on PLGA nanoparticles. However, concerns remain regarding their efficacy against cancer cells and toxicity to normal cells. This systematic review suggests that smaller PLGA nanoparticles exhibit higher cytotoxic potency, with sizes predominantly below 300 nm and zeta potentials around 20 mV. Comprehensive evaluations involving pharmacokinetic, toxicokinetic, in vivo and in vitro tests are needed to fully understand the potential of PLGA nanoparticles for cancer treatment.
