Correlation between the progression of diabetic retinopathy and inflammasome biomarkers in vitreous and serum - a systematic review

Charisse Y. J. Kuo et al.

Summary: This systematic literature review examined the role of the inflammasome in the development of diabetic retinopathy. The analysis showed that IL-1 beta and IL-18, as inflammasome biomarkers, significantly increased as diabetic retinopathy progressed. This suggests that the inflammasome pathway may be involved in the progression of diabetic retinopathy.

New Insights into Treating Early and Advanced Stage Diabetic Retinopathy

Rafael Simo et al.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the working-age population. The disease progresses slowly and can be divided into early-stage and advanced-stage. Current treatment options are limited, but in the future, neuroprotection and topical administration of eye drops may revolutionize the treatment of this condition.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, with the vitreous humor serving as a complex interactive platform for cytokines in the diabetic eye. Recent research has made significant progress in understanding the molecular patho-mechanisms of this disease through studying growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, and lipid-derived metabolites in the vitreous.
