Delta-like canonical Notch ligand 1 is predictive for sepsis and acute kidney injury in surgical intensive care patients

Emmanuel Schneck et al.

Summary: The early identification of sepsis in surgical intensive care patients is challenging due to postoperative physiological changes. This study found that soluble Delta-like protein 1 (sDLL1) may be a potential biomarker for identifying sepsis in these patients. The plasma levels of sDLL1 were significantly elevated in septic patients compared to surgical patients, and it showed good predictive performance for acute kidney injury. However, it had limited specificity for detecting sepsis in cardiac surgical patients, possibly due to impaired renal function. Overall, this study highlights the importance of sDLL1 as a potential biomarker for surgical intensive care patients.

Notch Ligand Delta-Like 1 Is Associated With Loss of Vascular Endothelial Barrier Function

Maximilian Moll et al.

Summary: The dysfunction of vascular endothelial cells and vascular leakage are characteristic features of sepsis, caused by a complex interplay of pathogen components, inflammation-related host factors, and the interaction between vECs and activated immune cells. The Notch cascade, activated through the binding of Notch ligand to its receptor, plays a role in regulating vascular endothelial integrity. The soluble form of the Notch ligand Delta-like1 (sDLL1) in septic patients' blood may contribute to loss of vEC barrier function through Notch signaling activation. Blocking DLL1-receptor binding and Notch signaling could potentially reduce LPS-induced endothelial dysfunction.

Endothelial Dysfunction and Neutrophil Degranulation as Central Events in Sepsis Physiopathology

Marta Martin-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a major global health problem with a high mortality rate. Early diagnosis is crucial for reducing the mortality rate. Endothelial dysfunction and neutrophil dysregulation play important roles in the pathophysiology of sepsis, and the use of biomarkers may provide a fast and accurate diagnostic tool. New biomarkers and treatments related to endothelial dysfunction and neutrophil dysregulation should be further researched to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of sepsis.
