Dietary Hermetia illucens Larvae Meal Improves Growth Performance and Intestinal Barrier Function of Weaned Pigs Under the Environment of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88

Qingsong Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the addition of Hermetia illucens larvae meal (HI) significantly improved the growth performance of weaned pigs and reduced the incidence of diarrhea. HI also enhanced intestinal barrier function, regulated inflammatory response, promoted intestinal immune-related gene expression, improved intestinal microbiota composition and diversity, and increased the concentrations of beneficial substances in the intestines. Furthermore, HI influenced histone acetylation and the TLR2-NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathway.

NAD+ metabolism and its roles in cellular processes during ageing

Anthony J. Covarrubias et al.

Summary: NAD(+) is a crucial coenzyme in redox reactions and plays a pivotal role in energy metabolism. Its levels decline with age, and raising NAD(+) levels is being explored as a potential strategy to extend human lifespan and healthspan. NAD(+) influences key cellular processes and functions, including metabolic pathways, DNA repair, and cellular senescence, with implications for healthy aging and age-related diseases.

Short-chain fatty acid administration via water acidifier improves feed efficiency and modulates fecal microbiota in weaned piglets

Mandy M. Lingbeek et al.

Summary: The water acidifier containing free and buffered short-chain fatty acids (SCFA-WA) had a significant positive effect on feed efficiency and water intake in weaned piglets, modulating the fecal microbiota with an increase in Clostridium and a decrease in Streptococcus abundance. This supplementation also showed a correlation between improved feed efficiency and the abundance of Butyricicoccus and Faecalibacterium in the microbiota.

Roles of Cholecystokinin in the Nutritional Continuum. Physiology and Potential Therapeutics

Laurence J. Miller et al.

Summary: This review discusses the role of cholecystokinin in maintaining nutritional homeostasis, specifically in appetite control, as well as the clinical failure of full agonists targeting type 1 cholecystokinin receptor in obesity management trials. Strategies such as biased agonists and allosteric modulators are explored for targeting the receptor. Additionally, the natural modulator cellular cholesterol and strategies to overcome its disruption of receptor coupling are discussed, highlighting the potential for new pharmacologic approaches for obesity treatment targeting the type 1 cholecystokinin receptor.

Tumour fatty acid metabolism in the context of therapy resistance and obesity

Andrew J. Hoy et al.

Summary: This review discusses the mechanistic links between fatty acid metabolism in cancer cells and disease behavior and therapy resistance, emphasizing the importance of factors such as lipid synthesis, storage, and catabolism in supporting tumorigenesis and treatment resistance. The role of membrane fatty acid composition is increasingly appreciated for promoting cell survival and limiting lipotoxicity and ferroptosis, while tumor cells exhibit plasticity in response to metabolic signals, such as obesity and cancer therapeutics, to promote aggressive, treatment-resistant disease. The study also highlights the impact of obesity-associated changes in host fatty acid metabolism on the tumor microenvironment and cancer cell behavior.

Serine-to-glycine ratios in low-protein diets regulate intramuscular fat by affecting lipid metabolism and myofiber type transition in the skeletal muscle of growing-finishing pigs

Xihong Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that maintaining a serine-to-glycine ratio of 1:2, with a total amount of 1.44%, in pigs fed a low CP diet (12% CP) resulted in the same average daily gain as those fed a normal CP diet (16% CP), but with increased intramuscular fat. These pigs also exhibited higher expression of genes involved in lipid oxidation, and more oxidative myofibers, suggesting that a dietary serine-to-glycine ratio of 1:2 is beneficial for improving meat quality in pigs fed a low CP diet.
