Liposomes Encapsulating Morin: Investigation of Physicochemical Properties, Dermal Absorption Improvement and Anti-Aging Activity in PM-Induced Keratinocytes

Morin, a polyphenol compound, has shown pharmacological properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and photoprotection effects. However, its poor water solubility hinders its pharmaceutical applications. This study aimed to encapsulate morin into liposomal vesicles to improve its solubility and skin penetration and evaluate its ROS inhibition and anti-aging activity. The results demonstrated that morin exhibited strong DPPH radical scavenging activity and effectively protected keratinocytes from particulate matter-induced damage by downregulating MMP-1 expression through the suppression of p-ERK and p-p38 in the MAPK pathway. Additionally, the water solubility of liposomal morin was significantly improved compared to free morin, and deformable liposomal vesicles enhanced dermal absorption. In conclusion, liposomal morin shows potential as a promising candidate for various topical anti-aging and anti-pollution products.

Ultraviolet Light Protection: Is It Really Enough?

Summary: Our current understanding of the mechanisms behind skin aging involves various environmental factors such as ultraviolet light, visible light, infrared, pollution, cigarette smoke, and others. These factors disrupt the cellular redox balance and lead to an oxidative stress condition by increasing the formation of reactive oxygen species. This disruption triggers downstream pathways that contribute to tissue inflammation and accelerate skin aging. Additionally, ultraviolet light and pollution increase intracellular free iron, which further promotes oxidative stress and contributes to extrinsic skin aging. Recent studies have shown that iron chelators can enhance the benefits of topically applied antioxidants. Therefore, a more comprehensive approach to protect against environmental aging should include sun protection, antioxidants, chelating agents, and DNA repair enzymes.

Immunological Aspects of Skin Aging in Atopic Dermatitis

While healthy aged skin shows overproduction of cytokines, older AD patients have decreased levels of Th2/Th22 related cytokines and increased expression of terminal differentiation markers, reflecting the persistence of AD in an aged skin environment.
