Rhizobial migration toward roots mediated by FadL-ExoFQP modulation of extracellular long-chain AHLs

Yuan-Yuan Ji et al.

Summary: Migration from rhizosphere to rhizoplane is a crucial process in root microbiome assembly. The presence of Rhizobiales members is significant in the core root microbiome of terrestrial plants. This study investigates the genome-wide transposon-sequencing of rhizoplane fitness genes of beneficial Sinorhizobium fredii on various crops and reveals the role of FadL and ExoFQP in modulating bacterial migration towards rhizoplane through the regulation of AHLs.

Non-Ionic Osmotic Stress Induces the Biosynthesis of Nodulation Factors and Affects Other Symbiotic Traits in Sinorhizobium fredii HH103

Francisco Fuentes-Romero et al.

Summary: Rhizobia are soil bacteria that can form nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with legume hosts. This study shows that non-ionic osmotic stress in Sinorhizobium fredii HH103, caused by mannitol, induces changes in gene expression and various bacterial traits, including the production of symbiotic signals.

High-throughput identification of genes influencing the competitive ability to obtain nutrients and performance of biocontrol in Pseudomonas putida JBC17

Swarnalee Dutta et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the underlying mechanisms of a biocontrol agent, Pseudomonas putida JBC17, in inhibiting the germination of Penicillium digitatum spores. Mutants in flagella-formation genes were found to enhance the biocontrol performance and inhibition of spore germination. Several other genes were also identified to be involved in the inhibition of spore germination. The results highlight the importance of nutrient competition and the genes influencing biocontrol ability.

The Rhizobium-Legume Symbiosis: Co-opting Successful Stress Management

Justin P. Hawkins et al.

Summary: The interaction between bacteria and plants can be positive, negative, or neutral. The rhizobium-legume interaction is a well-studied positive interaction model. This review discusses how rhizobia tolerate stresses and how these stress tolerance mechanisms play a role in signal exchange between rhizobia and legumes.

Transcriptomic Identification of a Unique Set of Nodule-Specific Cysteine-Rich Peptides Expressed in the Nitrogen-Fixing Root Nodule of Astragalus sinicus

Feng Wei et al.

Summary: This study conducted transcriptome analysis of the symbiotic relationship between Astragalus sinicus and Mesorhizobium huakuii. It was found that the specific NCR peptides of A. sinicus are dominated by a unique cationic group, which can affect the rhizobial cells. In functional characterization, it was discovered that one of the NCR peptides can inhibit the growth of rhizobial cells in laboratory media and form ineffective nodules on the plant.

How Rhizobia Adapt to the Nodule Environment

Raphael Ledermann et al.

Summary: Rhizobia are a diverse group of soil bacteria that engage in mutualistic interactions with legume plants, forming specialized root nodules. Within nodules, rhizobia undergo physiological reprogramming and metabolic rerouting for nitrogen fixation. Rhizobia experience host control and sanctioning, playing a fundamental role in the evolution of a stable mutualistic relationship.

The DnaK/DnaJ Chaperone System Enables RNA Polymerase-DksA Complex Formation in Salmonella Experiencing Oxidative Stress

Ju-Sim Kim et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that under oxidative stress conditions, the DnaJ and DksA co-dependently activate the stringent response in Salmonella with the assistance of DnaK, facilitating interactions between unfolded DksA and DnaK in a redox-based manner. This complex of DnaK/DnaJ/DksA enables the formation of an active RNA polymerase holoenzyme, which enhances the expression of specific genes related to amino acid and histidine metabolism in Salmonella exposed to reactive oxygen species.
