Mating Competitiveness of Male Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) Irradiated by X-rays

Shan Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that by irradiating male Spodoptera frugiperda insects with a 250 Gy dose of X-ray radiation and releasing them in a ratio of 12:1 with non-irradiated males, the sterility of their offspring reached 74% and there was no significant difference in mating competitiveness among the different ages of irradiated males. Field-cage experiments confirmed that release ratios ranging from 12:1 to 20:1 significantly reduced larval populations, with a leaf protection effect of 48-69% and an insect population reduction of 58-83%. This study provides fundamental information for controlling S. frugiperda using sterile insect techniques.

An odorant binding protein is involved in counteracting detection-avoidance and Toll-pathway innate immunity

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of altered expression of insect odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) during fungal infection on host behavior and immune responses. Through various techniques, it was found that the upregulation of OBP LmOBP11 in response to fungal infection affects insect behavior and immune activation. LmOBP11 is involved in insect detection of fungal volatile compounds and avoidance of contaminated food, but its elevated expression suppresses immune responses, promoting successful fungal infection. RNAi knockdown of LmOBP11 enhances host resistance and antimicrobial peptide production.

Chemosensory Proteins (CSPs) in the Cotton Bollworm Helicoverpa armigera

Aniruddha Agnihotri et al.

Summary: Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are small, soluble proteins that play a crucial role in transporting odorant and pheromone molecules in the insect chemosensory system. Recent studies reveal that they also function in development, nutrient metabolism and insecticide resistance. In this study, 27 CSP genes were identified from the genome and transcriptome sequences of cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner). The expression patterns of these genes were studied by using transcriptomic data obtained from different tissues and stages. The results demonstrate that H. armigera CSP genes are not only highly expressed in chemosensory tissues, such as antennae, mouthparts, and tarsi, but also in the salivary glands, cuticle epidermis, and hind gut. A new method was developed that significantly increased the expression levels of two selected CSPs as soluble recombinant proteins for purification. This study advances our understanding of insect CSPs and provides a new approach to highly express recombinant CSPs in E. coli.

Evolution of the odorant-binding protein gene family in Drosophila

Johnma J. Rondon et al.

Summary: Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are involved in the perception of olfactory signals in insects and mediate host preference and shifts. Studies on the Drosophila genus show significant variations in OBP gene repertoire among species, suggesting a role in host adaptation. The research indicates potential for rapid evolution and positive selection in specific OBP genes, especially in lineages associated with different ecological scenarios.

Summary: This study revealed the significant role of insect chemosensory proteins (CSPs) in insecticide resistance, showing gene gain-and-loss variations among insect populations and identifying a specific CSP gene associated with insecticide treatments. The transgenic Drosophila flies overexpressing this gene exhibited decreased sensitivity to various insecticides, supporting the involvement of CSPs in insect resistance mechanisms. Homology modeling and molecular docking analyses further confirmed the interactions between CSPs and insecticides, shedding light on potential new strategies for pest management.
