Orthodontic treatment in periodontally compromised patients: a systematic review

Christina Erbe et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the relationship between aggressive and chronic periodontitis and orthodontic treatment. The results showed that orthodontic treatment can improve function and esthetics in periodontally compromised patients, resulting in lower probing depths and clinical attachment gains. However, more high-quality studies are needed to obtain reliable and reproducible treatment results.

Effect of orthodontic therapy in periodontitis and non-periodontitis patients: a systematic review with meta-analysis

Conchita Martin et al.

Summary: The study found that in patients without periodontitis and those with stable treated periodontitis, orthodontic tooth movement did not have a significant impact on periodontal outcomes. Additionally, there was a lack of objective assessment on the outcomes of orthodontic therapy.

Paraprobiotics in Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy: Clinical and Microbiological Aspects in a 6-Month Follow-Up Domiciliary Protocol for Oral Hygiene

Andrea Butera et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of two new formulations of paraprobiotics, a toothpaste and a mouthwash, for the treatment of periodontal disease. The results showed that these products significantly reduced clinical indices and the presence of periodontopathogens, providing a valid support to non-surgical treatment.

Home Oral Care of Periodontal Patients Using Antimicrobial Gel with Postbiotics, Lactoferrin, and Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder vs. Conventional Chlorhexidine Gel: A Split-Mouth Randomized Clinical Trial

Andrea Butera et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of postbiotics and chlorhexidine in the treatment of periodontitis. The results showed that both oral gels were effective in treating periodontitis, but an increase in recession was observed. Further studies are needed to evaluate the chemical compounds in the gels.

Probiotic Alternative to Chlorhexidine in Periodontal Therapy: Evaluation of Clinical and Microbiological Parameters

Andrea Butera et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of two new formulations (toothpaste and chewing-gum) as support for periodontitis treatment. While probiotics showed benefits on certain clinical indexes and specific periodontopathogens, further research is needed to explore the relationship between probiotic colonization and improvement in clinical parameters.

The Efficacy of Powered Oscillating Heads vs. Powered Sonic Action Heads Toothbrushes to Maintain Periodontal and Peri-Implant Health: A Narrative Review

Camilla Preda et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of rotating-oscillating heads and sonic action heads powered toothbrushes on plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. The results showed similar outcomes in terms of plaque index, while each type of toothbrush had its advantage in gingival inflammation. However, due to the shortage of investigations, no definitive conclusion can be drawn regarding the superiority of one type of powered toothbrush over the other.

The Oral Microbiota Changes in Orthodontic Patients and Effects on Oral Health: An Overview

Maria Contaldo et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the impact of orthodontic treatment on the oral microbiota, potentially leading to the occurrence of caries, periodontal diseases, and other infections that affect the oral and systemic health of orthodontic patients. Comparison with subjects without orthodontic appliances revealed significant differences in supra- and subgingival plaque among orthodontic patients throughout the treatment period, with certain fixed appliance components posing high risks of periodontal disease and tooth decay. Further investigation is needed on the prevalence of Candida spp. and the lack of studies on viruses and protozoas in the oral microbiota of orthodontic patients.
