Environmental and human health risks of potentially harmful elements in mining-impacted soils: A case study of the Angouran Zn-Pb Mine, Iran

Giti Forghani Tehrani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the soil pollution status, levels of exposure, and potential ecological and health risks in the Angouran mining area in Iran. The study found that the highest concentrations of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) were present in the soils near waste rock dumps. Assessment methods including blood analysis and in vitro digestion extractions were used to evaluate the potential health impacts of exposure to PHEs. The study highlights the importance of using a combination of techniques to assess pollution and health risks in mining areas.

Manganese and copper additions differently reduced cadmium uptake and accumulation in dwarf Polish wheat (Triticum polonicum L.)

Xing Chen et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) on the growth and Cd uptake in dwarf Polish wheat under cadmium (Cd) stress. It was found that Mn deficiency and Cu deficiency increased Cd uptake and accumulation in roots, as well as Cd levels in root cell wall and soluble fractions, while inhibiting Cd translocation to shoots. On the other hand, Mn addition reduced Cd uptake and accumulation in roots, as well as Cd level in root soluble fraction. Cu addition did not affect Cd uptake and accumulation in roots, but caused changes in Cd levels in root cell wall and soluble fractions. Overall, Mn addition was effective in reducing Cd accumulation in wheat.

Nitric oxide mitigates vanadium toxicity in soybean (Glycine max L.) by modulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant system

Farwa Basit et al.

Summary: This research reveals the role of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) in alleviating vanadium (V)-induced phytotoxicity in soybean plants. It improves plant biomass, growth, and photosynthetic attributes by regulating carbohydrates and plants biochemical composition, and enhances guard cells and stomatal aperture of soybean leaves. NO supplementation also regulates plant hormones, phenolic profile, and detoxifies excessive V content, thereby reducing oxidative stress and enhancing crop development and production.

Metabolomics analysis reveal the molecular responses of high CO2 concentration improve resistance to Pb stress of Oryza sativa L. seedlings

Lanlan Wang et al.

Summary: By conducting experiments on rice seedlings exposed to different CO2 and Pb concentrations, it was found that elevated CO2 increases rice's resistance to Pb stress. This is achieved through improving osmotic adjustments, maintaining cell membrane stability, supplying energy, nitrogen assimilates, and antioxidant capacity.

Nitric oxide-mediated alleviation of arsenic stress involving metalloid detoxification and physiological responses in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Pradyumna Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: Rice, as a staple crop, is at risk of arsenic contamination, which poses a serious health threat. This study explores the protective role of nitric oxide (NO) in rice plants under arsenic stress. Exogenous NO supplementation protects the plant by regulating physiological traits and metabolic responses, reducing arsenic toxicity.

Exogenous Nitric Oxide Confers Tolerance to Cr(VI) in Maize (Zea mays L.) Seedlings by Modulating Endogenous Oxido-Nitrosative Events

Oussama Kharbech et al.

Summary: The use of exogenous compounds such as 'gasotransmitter' molecules is an established strategy to improve crop tolerance to environmental stresses. In this study, it was found that exogenous NO can mitigate Cr-induced damage and confer seedling tolerance to Cr through suppression of NADPH oxidase activity and increased GSNO contents.

Melatonin and nitric oxide: Dual players inhibiting hazardous metal toxicity in soybean plants via molecular and antioxidant signaling cascades

Muhammad Imran et al.

Summary: The combination of melatonin and nitric oxide enhances plant growth and reduces oxidative stress. It minimizes the toxicity of heavy metals by lowering levels of abscisic acid and jasmonic acid, while increasing levels of endo-melatonin and endo-S-nitrosothiol. Furthermore, the combined application reduces soil mobilization of Cd and Pb and increases plant resistance to heavy metal toxicity.

Overlooked contributions of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter on the adsorption of Pb (II): Impacts of fractionation and interfacial force

Xiaochen Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) on the immobilization of lead (Pb(II)) on biochar (BC). Results showed that fulvic-like substances and small molecules with low aromaticity in BDOM favored association with Pb(II) and re-adsorption on residual BC, with the adsorption mechanism dependent on the Pb(II) concentration. This research provides insights into the interfacial mechanisms between BDOM and Pb(II) and their contribution to long-term remediation of Pb-contaminated soils using BC.
