Transcription Profiling of Rice Panicle in Response to Crude Toxin Extract of Ustilaginoidea virens

Rongtao Fu et al.

Summary: Ustilaginoidea virens infection in rice leads to reduced yields and the development of false smut disease. The toxins produced by U. virens can inhibit the accumulation of sugar in rice panicles. In this study, RNA sequencing was used to analyze the gene expression profile of rice panicles treated with crude toxins. The results showed that U. virens toxins primarily affect glycometabolism, amino acid metabolism, and secondary metabolism processes in rice panicles. Additionally, the toxins disrupt stress resistance, total sugar accumulation, starch formation, and induce programmed cell death.

Enhanced Specificity in Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification with Poly(ethylene glycol)-Engrafted Graphene Oxide for Detection of Viral Genes

Jamin Ku et al.

Summary: Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a nucleic acid amplification method that allows the simple, quick, and low-cost detection of various viral genes. However, LAMP assays are susceptible to generating non-specific amplicons. In this study, it was found that poly(ethylene glycol)-engrafted nanosized graphene oxide (PEG-nGO) can significantly enhance the specificity of LAMP by adsorbing surplus ssDNA primers, reducing non-specific annealing. The inclusion of PEG-nGO greatly improves the specificity and sensitivity of the LAMP assay, facilitating the detection of HCV-positive clinical samples with superior precision compared to RT-qPCR.
