Solvation-Anionic Exchange Mechanism of Solvent Extraction: Enhanced U(VI) Uptake by Tetradentate Phenanthroline Ligands

Svetlana V. Gutorova et al.

Summary: Phenanthroline diamides (L) have the unique ability to extract uranium from nitric acid solutions and form 1:2 stoichiometry complexes as tight ion pairs {[UO2LNO3]+[UO2(NO3)3]-} in a polar organic solvent. This extraction mechanism combines solvation and ion-pair anion exchange, and was confirmed by UV-vis study and chemical synthesis. The structure of the complexes in the solid state was unambiguously determined through chemical synthesis and single crystal growth.

Organophosphorus Extractants: A Critical Choice for Actinides/Lanthanides Separation in Nuclear Fuel Cycle

Xiaofan Yang et al.

Summary: The separation of actinides from lanthanides is a crucial step in the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. Organophosphorus extractants, such as tributyl phosphate (TBP) and octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO), have been widely used due to their strong extraction ability and low cost. This article discusses the application scope, extraction mechanism, structure-function relationships, and newly developed organophosphorus extractants for the separation of actinides over lanthanides. The important role of these extractants and their potential applications in future advanced nuclear fuel cycle are also emphasized.

Pyrrolidine-Derived Phenanthroline Diamides: An Influence of Fluorine Atoms on the Coordination of Lu(III) and Some Other f-Elements and Their Solvent Extraction

Nane A. Avagyan et al.

Summary: Three pyrrolidine-derived phenanthroline diamides were studied as ligands for lutetium trinitrate. The presence of halogen atoms in the structure of phenanthroline ligands has a significant impact on the coordination number of lutetium and the number of solvate water molecules. Fluorinated ligands showed higher efficiency based on the measured stability constants. Complexation with lutetium led to a shift in the F-19 NMR signal. The advantages of chlorinated and fluorinated pyrrolidine diamides in liquid-liquid extraction were demonstrated.

First Example of Fluorinated Phenanthroline Diamides: Synthesis, Structural Study, and Complexation with Lanthanoids

Nane A. Avagyan et al.

Summary: An efficient method for synthesizing diamides of 4,7-difluoro-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid was elaborated. The method involves direct nucleophilic substitution with 4,7-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline precursors, resulting in high yields of difluoro derivatives. Four new fluorinated ligands were successfully prepared and their structures were confirmed using spectroscopic methods and X-ray data. Lanthanoid complexes were also synthesized to demonstrate the applicability of the new ligands, with their structures studied using solid-state (IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction) and solution-state (NMR spectroscopy) techniques.

2-Methylpyrrolidine derived 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diamides: promising extractants for Am(iii)/Ln(iii) separation

P. S. Lemport et al.

Summary: In this study, new examples of phenanthrolindiamides with asymmetric centers in amide substituents were synthesized and their structures were confirmed by spectral analysis and X-ray analysis. The synthesized ligands were found to form complexes with nitrates of rare-earth elements, and the stability constants of these complexes in acetonitrile solution were measured. Solvent extraction experiments showed that the presence of methyl groups in cyclic amide substituents significantly affected the distribution ratios and selectivity factors in the lanthanides(iii) and Am(iii) series.

Solvent Extraction Systems for Separation of An(III) and Ln(III): Overview of Static and Dynamic Tests

M. Evsiunina et al.

Summary: The management of high-level radioactive waste generated during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel in the PUREX process is a major challenge in modern radiochemistry. The concept of partitioning and transmutation aims to separate and reduce the radioactivity of elements like Am(III), Cm(III), and lanthanides(III). Liquid-liquid extraction is considered the most suitable method for this separation due to the similar physical and chemical properties of these elements.
