Spatiotemporal Distribution of Homogalacturonans and Hemicelluloses in the Placentas, Ovules and Female Gametophytes of Utricularia nelumbifolia during Pollination

Bartosz J. Plachno et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the distribution of cell wall components in Utricularia nelumbifolia to investigate the role of placenta, ovular tissues, hypertrophied central cell, and integument in guiding pollen tube development. The occurrence of cell wall components was found to be independent of pollination. Xyloglucans were observed to play a role in sexual reproduction. Utricularia nelumbifolia with its unique characteristics is an attractive model for studying plant male-female dialogue.

Immunocytochemical Analysis of the Wall Ingrowths in the Digestive Gland Transfer Cells in Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. (Droseraceae)

Bartosz J. Plachno et al.

Summary: Carnivorous plants have unique abilities to attract, trap, digest, and absorb nutrients from small animals or protozoa. This study investigates the composition of cell wall ingrowths in the glands of carnivorous plants and identifies differences between glandular and endodermoid cells.

Mapping Pectic-Polysaccharide Epitopes in Cell Walls of Forage Chicory (Cichorium intybus) Leaves

Xuezhao Sun et al.

Summary: This study mapped the distribution of pectic polysaccharides in the cell walls of forage chicory leaves using four monoclonal antibodies. The differential distribution of pectic epitopes among walls of different cell types and within walls may reflect the deposition and modification of these polysaccharides which are involved in cell wall properties and cell development.

Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Cell Wall Components in the Placentas, Ovules and Female Gametophytes of Utricularia during Pollination

Bartosz Jan Plachno et al.

Summary: In Utricularia, the development of female gametophyte surpasses traditional boundaries, invading the placenta and making direct contact with the ovary chamber, playing a crucial role in pollen tube guidance.

Contrasting effect of prey capture on jasmonate accumulation in two genera of aquatic carnivorous plants (Aldrovanda, Utricularia)

Jana Jaksova et al.

Summary: The study found that unlike Aldrovanda, Utricularia does not use jasmonates for the activation of carnivorous response, making it the second genus in Lamiales that has not co-opted jasmonate signaling for botanical carnivory. Both genera secrete digestive fluid containing cysteine protease homologous to dionain, but the regulation may vary between them.

The Placenta of Physcomitrium patens: Transfer Cell Wall Polymers Compared across the Three Bryophyte Groups

Jason S. Henry et al.

Summary: The study investigated the composition of cell wall polymers in Physcomitrium patens transfer cells using immunogold labeling TEM. The findings showed less pectins and AGPs in transfer cell walls compared to hornwort and liverwort, with similar composition on both sides of the placenta in P. patens. The variability in cell wall composition among bryophytes suggests that function and morphology do not necessarily require a common composition.
