Amphiphilicity-Controlled Localization of Red Emitting Bicationic Fluorophores in Tumor Cells Acting as Bio-Probes and Anticancer Drugs

Alessio Cesaretti et al.

Summary: This study investigated the binding ability of a highly water-soluble and red fluorescence dye with DNA and RNA, as well as the changes in their photophysical properties upon interaction with biological targets. The results revealed that certain fluorophores exhibited antiproliferative effects in the cell nucleus, while others were useful for specific organelle labeling in live cell imaging.

Summary: In this study, a bright and large light-up RNA imaging probe BIOP was developed for nucleolar RNA imaging in living cells. BIOP exhibited better performance compared to a commercial staining probe and showed high membrane permeability and low cytotoxicity in living cells. Additionally, BIOP enabled highly sensitive nucleolar RNA imaging.

Structure-dependent mitochondria or lysosome-targeting styryl fluorophores bearing remarkable Stokes shift

Ivona Cipor et al.

Summary: A series of monocationic styryl dyes were synthesized and characterized in this study. These dyes exhibited significant spectral shift and fluorescence enhancement, and showed strong affinity to DNA/RNA binding. The positioning and electronic properties of the dyes within the DNA/RNA binding site were found to play a crucial role in their fluorescence response selectivity.

Alejandro O. Viviano-Posadas et al.

Summary: In this study, a new compound 1 was synthesized and its structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 was studied as a fluorescent receptor for nucleotides and inorganic phosphorylated anions in water. It showed high affinity towards adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and guanosine 5'-tripohosphate (GTP) and could intercalate into DNA base pairs.

Nonlinear optical properties of a new panchromatic series of water-soluble bicationic push-pull fluorophores

Letizia Mencaroni et al.

Summary: Six water-soluble bications with a symmetric A+-pi-D-pi-A+ structure were synthesized and studied for their absorption, fluorescence properties, and nonlinear optical response. The molecules exhibited a panchromatic family of dyes covering the entire visible spectrum and displayed ultrafast intramolecular charge transfer processes. These compounds, with significant fluorescence capability and good water solubility, show potential for bioimaging applications.

The role of twisting in driving excited-state symmetry breaking and enhanced two-photon absorption in quadrupolar cationic pyridinium derivatives

Alessio Cesaretti et al.

Summary: This study investigated the excited-state dynamics and nonlinear optical properties of two symmetrical quadrupolar cationic push-pull compounds with different lateral electron donors, as well as their dipolar counterparts. The research found that excited-state symmetry breaking in the quadrupolar compounds significantly affects their nonlinear optical properties and two-photon absorption ability.

Twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and twists beyond TICT: from mechanisms to rational designs of bright and sensitive fluorophores

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of the TICT mechanism in guiding the development of bright and sensitive fluorophores. It also summarizes the molecular design strategies and compares the twisted intramolecular charge shuttle (TICS) and twists during photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanisms. Understanding the structure-property relationships between twisted geometries and fluorescence can aid in the rational development of fluorophores involving molecular twisting in the excited state.
