Should the Mediterranean diet be recommended for inflammatory bowel diseases patients? A narrative review

Alicja Ewa Ratajczak et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory disorders of unknown cause. Diet, especially the Mediterranean diet (MD), may play a role in the development and progression of IBD. MD can enrich beneficial bacteria in the gut and improve gut barrier function, reducing inflammation. However, adherence to MD is generally low among IBD patients, and they may avoid certain MD components due to gastrointestinal symptoms. Patients should be encouraged to adopt a healthy and well-balanced diet based on their individual tolerance.

New insights into activation and function of the AMPK

Gregory R. Steinberg et al.

Summary: AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a cellular energy sensor that is activated by increases in AMP/ADP to ATP ratios. Recent studies have discovered non-canonical pathways for AMPK activation, involving calcium, nutrients, metabolites, DNA and lysosome damage. AMPK has been found to regulate carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, mitochondrial and lysosomal homeostasis, and DNA repair. Its role in cancer, obesity, diabetes, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and other disorders has been explored, suggesting potential therapeutic targets.

New Insights into the Role of Oral Microbiota Dysbiosis in the Pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Ying Qi et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic intestinal inflammatory disorders characterized by genetic susceptibility, environmental triggers, and immune system disruption. Dysbiosis of the gut and oral microbiota may exacerbate IBD progression. Ectopic colonization of specific oral bacteria in the gut could lead to chronic intestinal inflammation in IBD patients.

Summary: The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing globally and significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Imbalance in intestinal flora has been identified as a critical factor in the progression of IBD. Regulating the composition and function of the intestinal flora has emerged as a potential treatment strategy, with numerous experiments confirming the relationship between intestinal flora, immune regulation, and anti-inflammation.

Colorectal Cancer in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Mechanisms and Management

Shailja C. Shah et al.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Chronic inflammation plays a key role in the development of neoplastic progression, resulting in dysplastic precursor lesions. Colitis-associated CRC shares molecular similarities with sporadic CRC and the microbiome and host immune system may also play a role. However, further research is needed to understand the specific molecular differences and their role in inflammation-associated cancers.

Glucocorticosteroids and the Risk of NAFLD in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Sara Jarmakiewicz-Czaja et al.

Summary: The incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing each year. Inadequate lifestyle, disturbances in intestinal microbiome, and the use of certain drugs are common causes of NAFLD. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are also at a higher risk of developing NAFLD. Steroid use, particularly in the treatment of IBD, is a significant contributing factor to the development of NAFLD. Further research is needed to determine the dose and exposure time of steroids that may lead to the development of NAFLD.

Summary: This article provides a detailed overview of the innate immune system's defense mechanisms against pathogens, with a focus on the role of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in immune responses. TLRs not only link innate immunity to adaptive immunity, but also directly regulate the function of T cells. In addition, the article discusses the critical role of TLR signaling in host defense against infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.

Dysregulated inflammasome activity in intestinal inflammation - Insights from patients with very early onset IBD

David Illig et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a disorder caused by imbalances of the microbiome and immune dysregulations. Multimeric inflammasomes play a critical role in regulating host defense and gut homeostasis. Excessive production of pro-inflammatory Interleukin-1 beta has been detected in IBD patients and associated with disease severity. Genome-wide association studies suggest that inflammasome components may be associated with IBD development.
