Non-coding RNA and their potential role in cardiovascular diseases

Monika Samra et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the role of non-coding RNAs in cardiovascular diseases and the databases that can improve the efficiency of experimental analysis of non-coding RNAs. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, and timely diagnosis remains a challenge. Non-coding RNAs have been proven to play a crucial role in transcriptional regulation and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Diagnostic and prognostic value of miR-486-5p, miR-451a, miR-21-5p and monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in patients with acute myocardial infarction

Liwenjing Xu et al.

Summary: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a serious complication of coronary heart disease with high mortality and disability rates. This study investigates the diagnostic and prognostic value of microRNAs (miRNAs) and the monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) in AMI patients. The results show that circulating miR-486-5p, miR-451a, miR-21-5p, and MHR may play critical roles in the early phase of AMI and serve as potential predictors for AMI diagnosis. MiR-451a is found to be a more reliable biomarker in diagnosing AMI patients, while circulating miR-21-5p may be used as a predictor for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) occurrence.

MicroRNAs as Potential Biomarkers in Coronary Artery Disease

Maria Bergami et al.

Summary: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major cause of global mortality, and there is a need for novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Recent evidence suggests a link between dysregulated miRNAs and cardiovascular diseases, including CAD. miRNAs have potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, and are involved in regulating multiple pathways that contribute to atherosclerotic plaque development. miRNAs are stable and easily detectable, making them attractive as biomarkers for cardiovascular disease diagnosis and prognosis.

Summary: Coronary artery disease is a major global cause of death, and current cardiovascular risk prediction algorithms still miss a significant portion of at-risk individuals. Therefore, researchers are searching for novel non-invasive biomarkers to improve cardiovascular risk assessment, with circulating miRNAs being a promising category.

Summary: This review discusses the involvement of various microRNAs in heart disease, focusing on miR-21, miR-1, miR-23a, miR-142-5p, miR-126, miR-29, miR-195, and miR-499, which are important indicators of myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis leading to heart failure. The clinical use of microRNAs as biomarkers and for therapeutic interventions in cardiovascular diseases holds great promise, but further research is needed to fully understand their specific actions in different pathological processes.

Summary: HF is a main consequence of cardiovascular diseases, and abnormal expression levels of miRNAs may be associated with its development. This systematic review identified potential non-invasive biomarkers (miR-21, miR-30c, miR-210-3p, let-7i-5p, miR-129, let-7e-5p, and miR-622) for HF through analyzing miRNA expression profiles. Further validation in larger-scale studies is needed to confirm these findings.
