Toward Near-Infrared Emission in Pt(II)-Cyclometallated Compounds: From Excimers' Formation to Aggregation-Induced Emission

Ariadna Lazaro et al.

Summary: Two series of Pt(II)-cyclometallated compounds with different (NCN)-C-boolean AND-N-boolean AND ligands and alkynyl-chromophore ligands were synthesized and characterized. The presence of weak intermolecular contacts leading to dimerization or aggregation was observed in the crystal structures of some compounds. The photophysical characterization showed two emission bands in solution, originating from the N<^>C<^>N ligands and (MLCT)-M-3/(ILCT)-I-3 transitions, and the formation of excimers with near-infrared (NIR) emission was identified in compounds with phenanthrene chromophores. Aggregates emitting at around 650 nm were also detected in acetonitrile/water mixtures.

Direct Synthesis of Fluorescent Oxazolo-phenoxazines by Copper-Catalyzed/Hypervalent Iodine(III)-Mediated Dimerization/Cyclization of 2-Benzylamino-phenols

Camilla Loro et al.

Summary: A novel synthetic strategy for the direct synthesis of oxazolo-phenoxazine compounds has been achieved through a dimerization/cyclization reaction of 2-benzylamino-phenols. Regioselective formation of 1-benzyl-2-phenyl-6-(aryl-benzyl)amino-benzimidazoles has also been demonstrated using specific starting substrates. The fluorescence emission properties of the synthesized products have been evaluated.

New Red-Shifted 4-Styrylcoumarin Derivatives as Potential Fluorescent Labels for Biomolecules

Raquel Eustaquio et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple, low-cost and effective synthetic strategy was developed to produce new red-shifted 4-styrylcoumarin derivatives as inexpensive fluorescent labels for biomolecules. These derivatives demonstrated bathochromic shifts and large Stokes shifts, and their photophysical properties were rationalized using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations.

Photoactive and Luminescent Transition Metal Complexes as Anticancer Agents: A Guiding Light in the Search for New and Improved Cancer Treatments

Brondwyn S. McGhie et al.

Summary: Cancer is responsible for over 9 million deaths worldwide each year. Current treatment options have low success rates, especially for late-stage cancers. Researchers globally are continuously searching for alternative treatment options. This study focuses on innovations in inorganic anticancer therapies with photoactive and luminescent properties. Transition metals offer advantages in both chemotherapeutics and luminescence. The study explores the effects of structural changes on the properties and the use of inherent luminescent properties for monitoring cellular localization in photodynamic therapy.

Hamid R. Shahsavari et al.

Summary: Cationic cycloplatinated(II) complexes with bisphosphine ligands showed higher cytotoxicity compared to cisplatin across various cancer cell lines, especially complex 3 exhibiting excellent antiproliferative activity. The stability of these complexes in biological environments and their mode of interaction with DNA were also investigated.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Phosphorescent metal complexes as theranostic anticancer agents: combining imaging and therapy in a single molecule

Cai-Ping Tan et al.

Summary: Phosphorescent metal complexes are a new kind of multifunctional antitumor compounds that can integrate imaging and antitumor functions in a single molecule. The potential to induce and monitor the dynamic behavior of subcellular organelles and the changes in microenvironment during therapy is demonstrated. Challenges in developing novel theranostic metallo-anticancer complexes for clinical translation are proposed.
