Bt GS57 Interaction With Gut Microbiota Accelerates Spodoptera exigua Mortality

Yazi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the genome characteristics of Bt GS57 and the diversity and functions of the gut bacteria in S. exigua. It is found that B. thuringiensis can cause a dynamic change in the gut microbiota of S. exigua, and the loss of gut microbiota significantly decreases the B. thuringiensis susceptibility of the larvae, providing new insights into the mechanisms of B. thuringiensis pathogenesis in insects.

A hemocyte-specific cathepsin L-like cysteine protease is involved in response to 20-hydroxyecdysone and microbial pathogens stimulation in silkworm, Bombyx mori

Guangzhao Pan et al.

Summary: A novel Cathepsin L-like protein, Cat L-like, was identified in silkworm, with specific and high expression in hemocytes. Its expression was up-regulated significantly after 20-E administration, suggesting regulation by insect hormone. Cat L-like showed important immune functions against bacterial infection.

RNA interference-mediated functional characterization of Group I chitin deacetylases in Holotrichia parallela Motschulsky

Dan Zhao et al.

Summary: Chitin deacetylases are crucial for insect survival by catalyzing chitin N-deacetylation to produce chitosan, making them important targets for insecticidal drug development. The study identified putative Group I chitin deacetylase genes in Holotrichia parallela and demonstrated their essential role in cuticle organization, providing a basis for potential new control strategies.

Molecular cloning and functional characterization of two insect chitin deacetylases from the American white moth, Hyphantria cunea

Dan Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, two chitin deacetylase genes, HcCDA1 and HcCDA4, were identified from Hyphantria cunea, with HcCDA1 showing higher expression in the integument and HcCDA4 being abundantly transcribed in the integument and hindgut. Injection of double-stranded RNA of HcCDA1 and HcCDA4 resulted in larval-pupal moulting difficulty and high larval mortality. These results suggest important roles of HcCDA1 and HcCDA4 in insect moulting and development, opening up new possibilities for designing RNA-based pesticides to protect crops.

Transcriptome analysis reveals potential function of long non-coding RNAs in 20-hydroxyecdysone regulated autophagy in Bombyx mori

Huili Qiao et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized lncRNAs associated with 20E-induced autophagy in the fat body of B. mori. The lncRNA LNC_000560 and its potential target gene AtG4B were found to be related to 20E-regulated autophagy in B. mori, providing insights for further research on the regulatory mechanisms of lncRNAs in autophagy and other biological processes in this insect model.
