Computational studies of the magneto-structural correlations in a manganese dimer with Jahn-Teller distortions

Jenna K. Buchanan et al.

Summary: The researchers investigated the effects of Jahn-Teller elongation and compression distortions on magnetic coupling parameters by modeling a series of complex cations. They found that complexes with both elongation and compression demonstrated greater ferromagnetic interaction, attributed to the orthogonality of the magnetic orbitals and cross-interaction between certain orbitals.Constraints calculations also showed how reducing compression resulted in a decrease in magnetic coupling between Mn-III centers.

Summary: A detailed study on the reaction of CF3-ynones with NaN3 was conducted, and it was found that the reaction can selectively synthesize different products through acid catalysis. High yields of 4-trifluoroacetyltriazoles were obtained when CF3-ynones reacted with NaN3 in ethanol, while 5-CF3-isoxazoles were formed under acid catalysis. Possible reaction mechanism was supported by DFT calculations, and the synthetic utility of the prepared products was demonstrated.

DFT Study of the Direct Radical Scavenging Potency of Two Natural Catecholic Compounds

Ana Amic et al.

Summary: Theoretical examinations were conducted to determine the potency of H-atom donation from quercetin and rooperol to CH3OO· and HOO· through thermodynamics, kinetics, and tunnelling. In lipid media, the donation of H-atom from quercetin's catecholic OH groups via the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism is more significant. H-atom donation from the A-ring OH groups is favored in rooperol. Kinetic analysis with tunnelling provides a more reliable prediction of the H-atom donation potency, contradicting the misleading statements about the impact of C-H bond breaking. The 3-O-phenoxide anion of quercetin and the 4'-O-phenoxide anion of rooperol are preferred sites for inactivation via the single electron transfer (SET) mechanism in an aqueous environment at pH = 7.4.

Mactanamide and lariciresinol as radical scavengers and Fe2+ion chelators - A DFT study

Ana Amic et al.

Summary: A DFT-based kinetic study reveals that mactanamide (MA) and lariciresinol (LA), two natural polyphenols, possess similar center dot OOH radical scavenging potency in lipid media through the proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Contrary to recent claims, the contribution of C-H bond breaking to this potency is negligible. Nevertheless, the predicted potency of both compounds is insufficient to protect biological molecules from oxidative damage in lipid media. In aqueous media, MA and LA phenoxide anions exhibit much higher scavenging potency via the single electron transfer (SET) mechanism, contributing to the protection of lipids, proteins, and DNA from center dot OOH radical damage. Additionally, MA and LA are capable of chelating catalytic Fe2+ ions, thereby inhibiting the formation of dangerous center dot OH radicals through Fenton-type reactions.

Magnetostructural relationships in [Ni(dmit)2]- radical anions

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the magnetic properties of salts based on [Ni(dmit)(2)](-) radicals and the different arrangements of these radicals in crystals. By analyzing models with neighboring [Ni(dmit)(2)](-) units with different interaction patterns, the study identifies the nature and expected amplitude of through-space interactions based on a valence-only model. Despite its simplicity, the model provides simple rules for predicting the interactions in systems containing [Ni(dmit)(2)](-) radicals.
