Neurological and cerebellar soft signs in bipolar disorder: The role of staging, type and history of psychotic symptoms

Adrian Andrzej Chrobak et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of BD type, stage, and the history of psychotic symptoms (HoPS) on the severity of neurological and cerebellar soft signs (NSS and CSS). The results showed that staging was closely related to CSS and NSS scores, while the history of psychotic symptoms was associated with oculomotor deficits. The study found that late-stage BD had more severe CSS and NSS than the control group, while early-stage BD only showed differences in posture and gait disturbances compared to the control group.

Association of Lithium and Second-Generation Antipsychotics with Neurocognition in Youth with Bipolar Disorder

Xinyue Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that current lithium use was significantly associated with poorer cognitive flexibility/set-shifting, however, after controlling for additional factors, this was no longer significant. Current SGA use was significantly associated with greater affective processing bias, but no other significant findings were observed. Overall, treatment with lithium or SGAs was associated with minimal neurocognitive impairments in youth with BD.

Retinal changes in bipolar disorder as an endophenotype candidate: Comparison of OCT-detected retinal changes in patients, siblings, and healthy controls

Batuhan Ayik et al.

Summary: This study investigated retinal changes in patients with bipolar disorder and their healthy siblings using optical coherence tomography (OCT), and explored these findings as potential endophenotype candidates. The results showed that GCL+IPL thicknesses were significantly correlated with functionality of patients and severity of the disorder.

Relationship between neurological and cerebellar soft signs, and implicit motor learning in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

Adrian Andrzej Chrobak et al.

Summary: This study utilized cluster analysis to investigate abnormalities in neurological and cerebellar soft signs in SZ and BD patients, revealing a potential relationship between implicit motor learning and these abnormalities. Results indicated deficits in motor functioning in SZ and BD patients in the form of neurological and cerebellar soft signs.

fNIRS study of prefrontal activation during emotion recognition-A Potential endophenotype for bipolar I disorder?

Ramkumar Segar et al.

Summary: Facial emotion recognition deficit is observed in many psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder (BD). This study compared the role of FER and PNHC in patients with BD, high-risk BD subjects, and healthy subjects. Hyper-activation of the DLPCF during FER in the HR group may indicate an increased risk for BD, while the lack of similar findings in the BD group could suggest a normalizing effect of medications. Differences in PNHC may be detectable earlier than differences in FER performance during the course of the illness, requiring further exploration.

Is processing speed a valid neurocognitive endophenotype in bipolar disorder? Evidence from a longitudinal, family study

Sussy C. Luperdi et al.

Summary: In this longitudinal family study, it was found that BD patients exhibited significantly impaired processing speed compared to healthy controls and unaffected relatives over a 2-year period. Family members showed intermediate performance, suggesting processing speed may be a cognitive endophenotype for BD. Further research is needed to confirm these preliminary findings.
