A unified high-order model for size-dependent vibration of nanobeam based on nonlocal strain/stress gradient elasticity with surface effect

Weidong Yang et al.

Summary: In this work, a unified high-order nanobeam model is established to investigate the vibration response of nanobeam. The effects of different parameters on the stiffness of nanobeam are analyzed, and the differences between various modes and surface effects are discussed. It is found that the introduction of surface elasticity improves the accuracy of predicting the vibration behavior of nanobeams.

A critical role of CNT real volume fraction on nanocomposite modulus

Ke Duan et al.

Summary: This study introduces the concept of the real volume fraction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and develops a new micromechanical model for the modulus of nanocomposites. The correctness and applicability of the model are verified through molecular dynamics simulations and experimental tests. Additionally, the study finds that the low real volume fraction of multi-walled CNTs is the key reason for the inferior mechanical properties of nanocomposites with uniformly dispersed fillers.

A compatible multiscale model for nanocomposites incorporating interface effect

Yiyuan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a simple yet useful three-dimensional interface theory to address the incompatibility problem between two-dimensional surface theories of elasticity and asymptotic homogenization theory in analyzing nanocomposites. The theory replaces stress discontinuity conditions with traction continuity and allows for easy specification of the positive definiteness of the elasticity tensor. Based on this theory and the asymptotic homogenization theory, a compatible multiscale model is developed to examine the scaling law of effective moduli of nanocomposites.

A nonlocal surface theory for surface-bulk interactions and its application to mechanics of nanobeams

Yiyuan Jiang et al.

Summary: A nonlocal surface theory is proposed to describe the interactions between surface and bulk media of nanostructures. The theory considers nonlocal contributions and receptions of surface and divides the nonlocal interactions into four parts: bulk-to-bulk, surface-to-surface, surface-to-bulk, and bulk-to-surface. Results show that the surface-to-bulk nonlocal interactions have the same order of magnitude as the bulk-to-bulk interactions.

Investigation of size effect on band structure of 2D nano-scale phononic crystal based on nonlocal strain gradient theory

Jun Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, the size-dependent band structure of a phononic crystal (PnC) was investigated using nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT). Numerical simulations showed that as the lattice constant approached the nano-scale, the size effect became more significant and resulted in a narrower band gap. It was also found that the strength of the size effect was mainly influenced by the thickness of the minimum connector.

A nonlocality-based homogenization method for dynamics of metamaterials

Chaosheng Mei et al.

Summary: A nonlocality-based homogenization method and a corresponding framework for calibration of its nonlocal parameters are proposed for periodic metamaterials. The calibration of nonlocal parameters is realized through the analysis of both macroscopic and microscopic representative volume element of metamaterials with periodic boundary conditions. Numerical results show that nonlocal parameters are dispersive for metamaterials rather than constant as traditional nonlocal theories indicate. The proposed method accurately predicts the eigenfrequencies and band gaps of metamaterial structures in a higher frequency range.

Static stability analysis of agglomerated multi-scale hybrid nanocomposites via a refined theory

Ali Dabbagh et al.

Summary: This study investigates for the first time the influences of carbon nanotubes' agglomeration on the stability behaviors of multi-scale hybrid nanocomposite beams within the refined higher order beam theories framework. The equivalent material properties are calculated using the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka model and the rule of mixture to consider the effects of carbon nanotubes on the mechanical properties of the composite materials. An energy-based approach is implemented to obtain the governing equations of the problem and solve them using Galerkin's analytical method to determine the critical buckling load.

Summary: In this study, the thermo-magneto-elastic wave dispersion of rotary functionally graded double-nanobeam systems is investigated using nonlocal strain gradient theory. The kinematic relations and scale influences are discussed, along with the introduction of the Mori-Tanaka homogenization model to determine effective material properties. The effects of external forces and the derivation of nonlocal governing equations are also explored, leading to the analytical solution for wave frequencies and phase velocities.

Summary: The current practice of using one-dimensional nonlocal constitutive relations for beam-type structures ignores the inherent three-dimensional interactions between atoms, leading to inaccurately predicted nonlocal structural behaviors. This study reveals and establishes how nonlocal interactions in the width and height directions of beams significantly affect the bending behaviors of nanobeams.

New insights into interface interactions of CNT-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites

Ke Duan et al.

Summary: Through molecular dynamics simulation, it was found that there are two different types of interfaces, weak and strong, between carbon nanotubes and epoxy matrices. The load transfer capability at the weak interface is very low, while the strong pull-out interface exhibits higher strength. Additionally, the interfacial shear strength is influenced by the diameter of the carbon nanotubes, but not by their length.
