Literature review: efficient deep neural networks techniques for medical image analysis

Mohamed A. Abdou

Summary: Significant evolution in deep learning occurred in 2010 with the use of graphical processing units for general-purpose applications, leading to progressive steps in deep neural networks (DNNs) across various applications. The convolutional neural network (CNN) stands out as a powerful way to learn useful representations of images and other structured data. The revolution of DNNs in medical imaging (MI) began in 2012 with the launch of ImageNet, a free database containing over 14 million labeled medical images. This comprehensive study explores recent research directions in DNNs applied in MI analysis, focusing on clinical and pathological analysis, classification, detection, localization, segmentation, and automatic diagnosis. It also covers different patterns of DNNs, with emphasis on CNN, and addresses limitations related to training and execution time, data augmentation, and image annotation. Furthermore, a comparative study of existing software frameworks supporting DNNs and future research directions is presented. It is evident from the works surveyed that the use of DNNs in healthcare is still in its early stages, but there are strong initiatives in academia and industry to pursue healthcare projects based on DNNs.
