Impact of sink design on bacterial transmission from hospital sink drains to the surrounding sink environment tested using a fluorescent marker

J. Pirzadian et al.

Summary: In hospitals, sinks act as reservoirs for bacterial pathogens. A study found that when fluorescein dye was applied to the drain of hospital sinks, droplets were found in almost all wash basins, especially in those without a drain plug. Sink design considerations such as installing drain plugs, reducing dripping, and adjusting the tap position can help prevent pathogen transmission from sinks.

Routes of transmission of VIM-positive Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the adult intensive care unit-analysis of 9 years of surveillance at a university hospital using a mathematical model

Thi Mui Pham et al.

Summary: This study analyzed VIM-PA surveillance data of two intensive-care unit (ICU) wards in Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam from 2010 to 2018 using a mathematical transmission model. The results showed that the majority of VIM-PA transmissions in these ICUs were caused by persistent environmental contamination, while only a small proportion were due to direct cross-transmission.

Characterization of an emergent high-risk KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae lineage causing a fatal wound infection after spine surgery

Luana Boff et al.

Summary: This study reported a rare fatal wound infection caused by a multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, which belongs to an emergent international clone with increased virulence potential and multiple resistance genes. The strain is a strong biofilm producer and shows resistance to beta-lactams and other antibiotics.

Environmental Contamination of Contact Precaution and Non-Contact Precaution Patient Rooms in Six Acute Care Facilities

Windy D. Tanner et al.

Summary: The study found that 13% of hospital rooms were contaminated with at least one multidrug-resistant organism. Although CP rooms had a higher frequency of contamination compared to non-CP rooms, contamination in non-CP rooms was not uncommon and could be an important reservoir for ongoing MDRO transmission. This suggests that MDRO contamination in non-CP rooms may be due to asymptomatic patient carriage, inadequate cleaning, or cross-contamination of surfaces by healthcare personnel hands.

Bacterial colonization dynamics and antibiotic resistance gene dissemination in the hospital environment after first patient occupancy: a longitudinal metagenetic study

Tilman E. Klassert et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the bacterial community structure in hospitals can quickly stabilize within a few weeks after patient occupancy, with a significant increase in bacterial biomass and diversity during the colonization process. Additionally, the results highlighted a rise in antibiotic resistance determinants on hospital floors, emphasizing the importance of infection control strategies in healthcare settings.
