The association between blood PFAS concentrations and clinical biochemical measures of organ function and metabolism in participants of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS)

Sabit Cakmak et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between six PFAS and organ and metabolic function. The results showed that exposure to selected PFAS is associated with clinical blood tests reflecting metabolism and the function of several organ systems. These relatively small changes may possibly indicate early pathology that is clinically inapparent and may possibly be of significance in a general population or in individuals exposed to very high levels of PFAS.

Qiyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the chronic hepatotoxicity and molecular mechanisms of PFOS and its alternatives. The results showed that these compounds caused changes in liver histopathology and function, with F-53B exhibiting the highest toxicity. Associations of typical antibiotic residues with elderly blood lipids and dyslipidemia in West Anhui, China

Li Kong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between urinary antibiotic levels and blood lipid levels in the older population. Findings showed that certain antibiotics were associated with increased triglycerides and cholesterol levels, while others had a negative correlation with total cholesterol levels. Stratification analysis revealed specific differences in the correlation between antibiotic exposure and lipid levels based on waist circumference values. Older participants with higher waist circumference values were found to be vulnerable to antibiotic exposure.

Association of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with thyroid homeostasis during pregnancy in the SELMA study

Arash Derakhshan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) during early pregnancy and markers of the maternal thyroid system. The results showed that higher levels of PFAS were associated with higher FT4 and TT4, while higher levels of PFUnDA were associated with lower FT3 and TT3. Overall, higher concentrations of PFAS were associated with higher FT4/FT3 and TT4/TT3 ratios. These findings suggest that PFAS exposure may interfere with the thyroid system during pregnancy.

Di Du et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution characteristics of PFAAs in 91 main river estuaries along the coast of China and estimated the riverine fluxes of PFAAs into the coastal marine environment. The results showed that PFOA, PFBA, and PFBS were dominant in the coastal region, indicating a shift from long-chain to short-chain PFAAs. PFAAs concentrations in the coast of China were at a moderate level compared to global data, with hotspots influenced by fluorochemical industries.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) Impair Lipid Metabolism in Rana nigromaculata: A Field Investigation and Laboratory Study

Huikang Lin et al.

Summary: The effects of PFASs on lipid metabolism in black-spotted frogs were investigated through a field and laboratory study. Results showed that PFASs accumulate in frog tissues in a fluorochemical industrial area. Exposing frogs to PFASs in the laboratory led to changes in hepatic fatty acid composition and increased hepatic TG content. PFASs also induced cross-talk accumulation of lipids between the liver and serum, and affected gene expression related to lipogenesis and lipolysis.

Toxic effects and transcriptional responses in zebrafish liver cells following perfluorooctanoic acid exposure

Dong-Lei Wu et al.

Summary: This study systematically assessed the toxic effects of different concentrations of PFOA on zebrafish liver cells. It was found that PFOA inhibited cell viability and caused massive accumulation of autophagic vacuoles. Transcriptome analysis revealed significant changes in the expression of genes involved in autophagy, signal transduction, immune system, and other pathways. These findings provide a scientific basis for understanding the toxic effects and potential mechanisms of PFOA on zebrafish.

Source apportionment of perfluoroalkyl substances in Great Lakes fish

Yan Lin et al.

Summary: The study identified five sources of PFAS in fish from the Great Lakes using PMF analysis, including emissions from primary and secondary sources, PVDF manufacture or processing, hot spots near air force bases, and metabolism of precursors. The spatial variations of these sources showed unexpected low values near urbanized areas, potentially due to unique wastewater and stormwater infrastructure or atmospheric transport of precursors. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of PMF in source apportionment of PFAS in fish despite ADME processes potentially altering fingerprints in fish compared to their surrounding environment.

Thyroid hormone: sex-dependent role in nervous system regulation and disease

Shounak Baksi et al.

Summary: Thyroid hormone plays a crucial role in regulating various functions in the body, related to metabolism, cell differentiation, and nervous system development, and can lead to nervous system-related problems if its levels are altered. It is associated with neuropsychiatric disorders and shows sex-specific differences in neuronal signaling. Steroid hormones are considered primary regulators in male- and female-specific neuronal signaling, but thyroid hormone may also play a key role in regulating brain signaling in a sex-specific manner.
