An energy-efficient plasma methane pyrolysis process for high yields of carbon black and hydrogen

Laurent Fulcheri et al.

Summary: A novel thermal plasma process for economically viable commercial-scale hydrogen and carbon black production is introduced in detail. The selectivity and yield of solid carbon and gaseous hydrogen are emphasized. Lab scale reactor data demonstrates the technical viability, with methane feedstock conversions of >99%, hydrogen selectivity of >95%, solid recovery of >90%, and the ability to produce carbon particles of varying crystallinity. The energy intensity of this process is currently around 25 kWh per kg of H2 produced, significantly lower than water electrolysis.

Soot growth mechanism in C2H2 combustion with H2 addition: A reactive molecular dynamics study

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: A numerical investigation was conducted to study the effect of H2 addition on soot formation during C2H2 combustion at the molecular level. The results showed that the chemical effect of H2 inhibited the formation of soot particles by reducing their size and density. The addition of H2 also increased the consumption rate of C2H2 and the formation rate of H2O, while decreasing the formation rate of CO.

Comparison of the performance of a microwave plasma torch and a gliding arc plasma for hydrogen production via methane pyrolysis

Simon Kreuznacht et al.

Summary: This study investigates hydrogen production through plasma methane pyrolysis using a microwave plasma torch (MPT) and a gliding arc plasmatron (GAP). The performance of the two plasma sources is compared in terms of methane conversion, product spectrum, and energy efficiency. The physical and chemical properties of the produced carbon particles are also compared. The results show that the methane conversion is higher in the GAP compared to the MPT. Amorphous spherical carbon particles are produced in the volume of the plasma source in the MPT, while in the GAP, methane pyrolysis stops after the production of acetylene and the conversion of acetylene into solid carbon takes place on top of the electrode surfaces, leading to different characteristics of the carbon particles.

Synthesis of boron nitride nanotubes in thermal plasma with continuous injection of boron under atmospheric pressure

Minseok Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, highly crystalline and small-diameter boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) were synthesized using a triple DC thermal plasma jet at atmospheric pressure. The reaction pathway to BN phase was analyzed through thermodynamic equilibrium analysis. It was found that the reaction between nitrogen ion and boron to form BN phase is more favorable thermodynamically than the recombination of nitrogen ion with electron. The study also suggests an industrial-scale production method for BNNTs.

Pyrolysis of methane via thermal steam plasma for the production of hydrogen and carbon black

Alan Maslani et al.

Summary: The study investigates methane pyrolysis for hydrogen and solid carbon production using a plasma reactor equipped with a DC plasma torch. Optimal methane conversion rates and gas composition were achieved at specific plasma power and input methane flow rates. The presence of oxygen was found to enhance methane conversion efficiency despite lower available energy.

Influence of hydrogen addition on methane coupling in a moderate pressure microwave plasma

M. Wnukowski et al.

Summary: The study showed that adding hydrogen can increase methane conversion, acetylene and ethylene yield and selectivity in a microwave moderate pressure plasma reactor. It was also found to decrease the output of problematic soot-like products. This indicates that hydrogen addition is a simple yet effective method for enhancing selectivity in plasma reforming of methane.
