Investigation of deformation mechanics and forming limit of thin-walled metallic bipolar plates

Hossein Talebi-Ghadikolaee et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation of metallic bipolar plates using 316 stainless steel sheet with a parallel serpentine flow field. The plastic deformation of microchannels, forming limit criteria, and deformation mechanics during the process are explored to establish a reliable fracture initiation model. Experimental stamping tests and finite element simulations are conducted, showing good agreement with thickness distribution and force-displacement curves. A fracture model based on thinning percentage and equivalent strain is developed to predict the instability of metallic bipolar plates.

Influence of process parameters and defect analysis in hot deep drawing process of aluminum alloy AA6082

Ma Wen-yu et al.

Summary: A novel punch toolset was developed to investigate the hot stamping of AA6082-T4 sheet. The effects of process parameters on formability were quantified using Taguchi design, ANOVA, and mathematical statistics. The finite element model in Pamstamp software was utilized to simulate and analyze the effects on the minimum thickness and thickness variation of the hot-stamped component. The major factors influencing the minimum thickness were found to be blank holder force and friction coefficient, while punch velocity and blank holder force significantly affected the thickness deviation. Various types, phenomena, and mechanisms of defects occurring during hot stamping process were discussed.

Formability improvement in multi-stage stamping of ultra-thin metallic bipolar plate for proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Minh Tien Tran et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel die design is proposed for the fabrication of ultra-thin metallic bipolar plates (BPP) for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Finite element simulations demonstrate that the multi-stage forming with the proposed die approach significantly improves the formability of ultra-thin BPP. The results indicate a more uniform thickness distribution and reduced springback, leading to the fabrication of high-quality metallic BPP and a relatively high fuel consumption efficiency.

Fracture prediction in the stamping of titanium bipolar plate for PEM fuel cells

Vahid Modanloo et al.

Summary: This study employed the stamping process to fabricate metallic bipolar plates and investigated the fracture issues during plastic deformation of commercially pure titanium. Several fracture criteria were studied for fracture prediction, with the damage-based criteria proving to be more reliable for accurate fracture prediction during stamping.

Integration of design of experiment and finite element method for the study of geometrical parameters in metallic bipolar plates for PEMFCs

F. Ahmadi Khatir et al.

Summary: Bipolar plates play a crucial role in fuel cells, and this study mainly focuses on the manufacturing process of metallic bipolar plates and the influence of geometric parameters on the plate formation. Experimental results indicate that channel depth, draft angle, and corner radius have the most significant effect on plate thinning, while corner radius and draft angle have the greatest impact on maximum channel depth.

Effects of Variable Punch Speed and Blank Holder Force in Warm Superplastic Deep Drawing Process

Ken-ichi Manabe et al.

Summary: By conducting a cylindrical deep drawing test, the flange wrinkle behavior and wall thickness distribution in warm deep drawing were studied using a superplastic material. The experiment with variable BHF showed a significant impact on wall thickness distribution uniformity, while variable SPD was found to reduce processing time effectively for superplastic materials. The authors also demonstrated the effectiveness of the variable BHF/SPD deep drawing method.
