Hydrogen-assisted intergranular fatigue crack initiation in metals: Role of grain boundaries and triple junctions

Rakesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Small-scale, low-cycle fatigue experiments were conducted on hydrogen charged nickel specimens to identify potential intergranular crack initiation sites. A crystal plasticity model considering dislocation density and a hydrogen transport model based on slip-rate were developed to study the micromechanics. A fatigue indicator parameter (FIP) was introduced to model the crack initiation process by considering plastic slip, GB stress, and local hydrogen concentration. The analysis showed that special GBs retain more hydrogen due to low diffusivity, while random GBs quickly diffuse hydrogen to the bulk.

Microstructure and sulfide stress corrosion cracking of the Inconel 625/X80 weld overlay fabricated by cold metal transfer process

Lijin Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure and SSCC behavior of an Inconel 625/X80 weld overlay fabricated using the CMT process. The research reveals a tempering effect in the overlap zone, resulting in a homogenized microstructure and reduced residual strain in the heat affected zone, greatly improving the SSCC resistance.

Atomistic simulations of hydrogen distribution in Fe-C steels

C. Nowak et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the distribution and transport kinetics of hydrogen in Fe-C steels. It was found that hydrogen preferentially resides in martensite, especially in regions with high dislocation density near the martensite/ferrite boundaries. Additionally, the rate of hydrogen transport through ferrite was found to be significantly faster than that in martensite.

Effect of stress on the crevice corrosion of P110 steel in the CO2-saturated NaCl solution containing thiosulphate/H2S

Lijin Dong et al.

Summary: The effect of stress on the crevice corrosion of P110 carbon steel in CO2-saturated NaCl solution was investigated. Stress was found to make the mackinawite film at the crevice mouth more easily spalled off, and increasing stress led to a deeper and sharper corrosion groove at the crevice mouth, promoting crevice corrosion.

Microstructure and properties of intercritically reheated coarse-grained heat affected zone in pipeline steel after secondary thermal cycle

Yongdian Han et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructural transformation in the ICCGHAZ of X100 pipeline steel after a secondary thermal cycle and its hydrogen sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC) resistance. The microstructure of the steel remains similar after the primary and secondary thermal cycles, with no significant impact on the crystallographic characteristics of the ICCGHAZ. An increase in t(8/5) leads to a decrease in SSCC resistance and more noticeable cleavage fracture characteristics.
