Summary: Repurposing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport has gained significant attention, but corrosion defects on these aged pipelines can lead to hydrogen embrittlement. A finite element model integrating solid mechanics and hydrogen atom diffusion was developed to investigate hydrogen atom distribution at a corrosion defect on a steel pipe segment under longitudinal tensile strains. The applied strain affects local stress and strain concentrations, thus influencing hydrogen atom diffusion. Without strain, hydrogen atoms diffuse uniformly into the pipe body driven by a concentration gradient. However, strain-driven diffusion leads to hydrogen atom accumulation at the corrosion defect, and the location of accumulation depends on the defect characteristics.

Summary: The present numerical work investigates the heat transfer characteristics in mildly rarefied gaseous Nitrogen flows. The study analyzes the behavior of thermal flow field with increasing rarefaction and establishes the dependence of Nusselt number on Knudsen number and Reynolds number. The findings show that the fully developed Nusselt number reaches a maximum value at a certain Knudsen number and Reynolds number, and then decreases with further increase in Knudsen number. The axial span of the thermally fully developed region also decreases with rising degree of rarefaction. The strength of viscous dissipation remains negligible, and the increase in kinetic energy due to expansion work becomes smaller as rarefaction increases.

Summary: The aim of this paper is to investigate the multi-factor-dependent and nonlinear hydrodynamic characteristics of a high-Froude-number ventilated supercavitating vehicle and reveal the forming mechanisms of the complex hydrodynamic forces. A high-fidelity numerical model is established and validated, and the ventilated supercavitation flow is studied over a wide range of angles of attack and gas entrainment coefficients. The results show that the hydrodynamic characteristic of the ventilated supercavitating vehicle depends on the position relationship between the supercavity boundary and the vehicle, and can be controlled and improved by adjusting the gas entrainment coefficient.

Summary: To enable reliable lean-premixed gas turbine combustion with pure hydrogen or high hydrogen content fuels, multi-element injector configurations comprising numerous small-scale jet nozzles are required. The integration of large numbers of millimeter-scale injectors in tightly clustered arrays is likely to produce peculiar topological states determined by the collective dynamics of strongly interacting premixed hydrogen flames. Experimental investigation of two different pure hydrogen flame ensembles reveals that the characteristic dimension of a single injector element is the main determinant of the fundamental frequency of self-induced pressure oscillations, and that flame dynamics play a mechanistic role in the growth of higher harmonics, defining the thermoacoustic state of clustered lean-premixed hydrogen flames.

Summary: An enriched finite element approach with appropriate enrichment function is proposed for transient analyses of wave propagations in nonhomogeneous media. The traditional linear nodal interpolation functions for low order finite elements are enriched by augmentation, utilizing polynomial bases and trigonometric functions as enrichment functions. The method also introduces a simple and direct approach to address the linear dependence issue of system equations. Numerical results demonstrate improved accuracy compared to standard finite elements, and the proposed method exhibits monotonous convergence to the exact solution in transient wave analysis. This property allows for consistent increase in solution accuracy by reducing temporal discretization step size, making it particularly suitable for tackling wave propagations in nonhomogeneous media.
