This study investigated the generation of hydrogen gas through the hydrolysis reaction of aluminum scraps and reverse osmosis rejects. It was found that an ALS dosage of 5g showed the best results in all wastewater mediums. The hydrogen quality was analyzed using gas chromatography, and the morphology and element composition of the by-products were evaluated using SEM, EDS, XRD, and FTIR.
Hydrogen gas is generated through hydrolysis reaction of aluminum scraps (ALS) and reverse osmosis rejects (RO) rejects. Various ALS dosages are used to study the effect of ALS on the hydrolysis reaction at optimized pH of 14. The effects of different wastewater mediums such as tannery RO reject and household RO rejects on hydrolysis reaction were examined. The addition of ALS dosage of 5g shows prominent results in all wastewater mediums. The tannery RO rejects achieved a maximum hydrogen generation of 7480 ml from 5g ALS and attained full hydrogen yield in 28 min. Hydrogen quality of 99.82%, 91.74%, and 75.45% were obtained from distilled water, tannery RO rejects and household RO rejects using gas chromatography, respectively. The morphology and element composition of by-products were evaluated by using SEM, EDS, XRD and FTIR. Dissolved organic matter in all medium was analyzed. The activation energy of 69.92 kJ/mol, was obtained. (c) 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
