Solar energy conversion by photosystem II: principles and structures

Dmitry Shevela et al.

Summary: Photosynthetic water oxidation by Photosystem II (PSII) is a fascinating process that sustains life on Earth and provides a blueprint for renewable energy applications. In the past two decades, significant progress has been made in the biophysical, computational, and structural understanding of PSII, including high-resolution crystal structures of stable and intermediate states. This article summarizes the current knowledge on PSII, emphasizing the basic principles of energy conversion and molecular structures involved. Remaining questions and a potential molecular pathway for biological water oxidation are discussed.

Restricting electron flow at cytochrome b6f when downstream electron acceptors are severely limited

Shai Saroussi et al.

Summary: This study reveals a mechanism in green algae where photosynthetic electron transport is restricted to protect PSI from light damage when downstream electron acceptors are limited. The activation of PTOX under these circumstances helps dissipate excess excitation energy from PSII and generates a proton motive force for ATP production. The research provides insights into the response and protective mechanisms of photosynthetic electron transport under reduced availability of downstream electron acceptors.

Scaling-up and proteomic analysis reveals photosynthetic and metabolic insights toward prolonged H2 photoproduction in Chlamydomonas hpm91 mutant lacking proton gradient regulation 5 (PGR5)

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: Clean and sustainable H-2 production is crucial to a carbon-neutral world. This study investigated a mutant lacking the PGR5 gene and found that it had high H-2 productivity and stability under sulfur deprivation conditions. Proteomic analysis revealed the molecular mechanisms underlying the enhanced H-2 production in this mutant.

Global potential of algae-based photobiological hydrogen production

Yimin Chen

Summary: Photobiological hydrogen production through algae is a promising way to obtain green hydrogen energy, but its sustainability and cost hinder large-scale commercial production. This study presents a blueprint for sustained bioH(2) production and evaluates its economic feasibility locally. By comparing different methods and conducting geographic analysis, the potential of algal bioH(2) production is demonstrated.

Recent Achievements in Microalgal Photobiological Hydrogen Production

Eleftherios Touloupakis et al.

Summary: Hydrogen production is a critical technology in the transition towards renewable energy sources, with microalgae playing an important role. Current research indicates that the traditional sulfur protocol strategy is not economically viable, prompting the need for a paradigm shift in photobiological hydrogen production. In addition to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, other microalgal strains are being tested for their ability to produce sustainable amounts of hydrogen.

Thioredoxin-mediated regulation of (photo)respiration and central metabolism

Paula da Fonseca-Pereira et al.

Summary: Thioredoxins play a crucial role in the redox regulation of plant metabolism, activating photosynthesis and adjusting mitochondrial photorespiratory metabolism. Mitochondrial TRX o1 has been identified as a regulator for alternative oxidase and enzymes associated with the tricarboxylic acid cycle, as well as being involved in photorespiration and branched chain amino acid degradation.

Starch Production in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii through Supraoptimal Temperature in a Pilot-Scale Photobioreactor

Ivan N. Ivanov et al.

Summary: Increasing the temperature above optimal levels can promote starch accumulation in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, with a nearly three-fold increase in starch content achieved within 1-2 days. This method offers a rapid alternative for inducing starch production compared to traditional methods, but still poses challenges in terms of bioreactor design and light availability within the culture.
