Biohydrogen production by novel cyanobacterial strains isolated from rice paddies in Kazakhstan

Bekzhan D. Kossalbayev et al.

Summary: The limited supply of oil has led to the exploration of alternative energy sources, with hydrogen gas emerging as a promising option. A wild strain of cyanobacteria isolated from rice paddies in Kazakhstan has shown high hydrogen production potential. Among the strains studied, Synechocystis sp. S-1 exhibited the highest hydrogen production rate under light conditions, while the wild-type cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis A-1 had a higher hydrogen production rate in the dark.

Algal biomass valorization for biofuel production and carbon sequestration: a review

Asma Sarwer et al.

Summary: The depletion of fossil fuels and the continuous increase in carbon dioxide concentrations have led to an energy crisis and environmental issues globally. Microalgal biofuels, produced using sunlight, water, and simple salt minerals, have the potential to be a key solution. Microalgae's high growth rate, photosynthesis, and ability to sequester carbon dioxide make them important biorefinery platforms. Additionally, their ability to produce high-value compounds under environmental stresses makes them a promising alternative to fossil fuels.

Strategies and economic feasibilities in cyanobacterial hydrogen production

Gulzhanay K. Kamshybayeva et al.

Summary: Cyanobacteria are potential producers of economically viable hydrogen energy, but the current amount of hydrogen obtained is limited. To produce large amounts of cyanobacterial hydrogen, the most active wild-type strains need to be selected and technological, modular, and genetic research must be conducted simultaneously. The low energy efficiency of cyanobacterial hydrogen also requires comprehensive research.

Prospects of cyanobacterial pigment production: Biotechnological potential and optimization strategies

Sandugash K. Sandybayeva et al.

Summary: Growing awareness of the harm caused by synthetic colorants has led to a preference for natural alternatives such as plant or microbial pigments. Cyanobacteria are a valuable source of natural biopigments, with bio-based pigments being sold as extracts to reduce costs. Various methods are used for pigment extraction, and continuous cultivation systems are considered the most suitable for large-scale production. However, high installation and operation costs limit the large-scale production of cyanobacterial pigments.

Optimisation of microalgal cultivation via nutrient-enhanced strategies: the biorefinery paradigm

Gonzalo M. Figueroa-Torres et al.

Summary: This study establishes microalgal cultivation strategies for maximized starch and lipid formation by developing a multi-parametric kinetic model suitable for predicting mixotrophic microalgal growth dynamics co-limited by nitrogen and phosphorus. The model's high predictive capacity was experimentally validated and the identified optimal cultivation strategies significantly increased starch (+270%) and lipid (+74%) production. The findings highlight the benefits of using modeling frameworks as optimization tools for the development and commercialization of microalgae-to-fuel technologies.

Ines Guerra et al.

Summary: The study compared batch, continuous, and semi-continuous operation regimes in 2.6 m(3) tubular photobioreactors and found that the oleaginous microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica showed higher biomass and lipid productivities under semi-continuous and continuous operation regimes. However, these regimes also consumed nearly double the amount of water compared to the batch regime.

Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Fractionation from Crude Palm Oil (CPO)

Zuchra Helwani et al.

Summary: In order to produce high-quality biodiesel, it is necessary to fractionate polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The study aimed to separate linoleic acid from CPO and determine the best conditions for the separation process to produce fatty acids with low iodine numbers. The results showed that the fractionation method at a temperature of 35 degrees C, an extraction time of 4 h, and a ratio of CPO and solvent of 1:3 produced fatty acids with low iodine numbers and high oxidation stability.
