Constructal design of weight optimized metal hydride storage device embedded with ribbed honeycomb

Martin George et al.

Summary: Solid state storage of hydrogen offers little advantage over compressed and liquefied forms. Heat transfer plays a crucial role in controlling the charging and discharging process. Different thermal enhancement methods have been proposed, but the added weight of these structures can decrease the gravimetric storage capacity. This study introduces a ribbed honeycomb structure embedded in a multi-tubular storage device to optimize heat transfer, resulting in a device that can charge 0.01 kg of hydrogen in 10 minutes with a weight of 1.2 kg at an optimum length/thickness ratio.

Numerical investigation of heat and mass transfer during hydrogen desorption in a large-scale metal hydride reactor coupled to a phase change material with nano-oxide additives

Atef Chibani et al.

Summary: In order to reduce heat consumption during the discharging cycle of hydrogen metal hydride (MH) storage units, the strategy of using nano-PCM (phase change material containing nano oxides) has been adopted to accelerate the release of latent heat (LH) stored in the PCM to the MH. The process was evaluated in a large-scale horizontal cylindrical reactor equipped with 4 PCM tubes evenly distributed in the MH-bed.
