Influence of the gas diffusion layer on the performance of an open cathode polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell

A. J. Navarro et al.

Summary: The performance of an open cathode fuel cell was investigated with different gas diffusion layers in its membrane electrode assemble (MEA) preparation. A new diffusion layer called eCoCell developed in the laboratory was compared with the commercial diffusion layer Sigracet 38BC. The characterization of both diffusion layers was conducted through measuring porosity, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and hydrophobicity. The results showed that the new gas diffusion layer, eCoCell, exhibited optimum performance across all studied temperatures due to its high hydrophobicity, bimodal pore distribution, low thermal conductivity, and high electrical conductivity.

Air-breathing versus conventional polymer electrolyte fuel cells: A parametric numerical study

Fatma Calili-Cankir et al.

Summary: Two mathematical models were built to explore the reasons affecting the performance of air-breathing and conventional polymer electrolyte fuel cells. A parametric study revealed that the conventional fuel cell outperforms the air-breathing fuel cell due to higher forced convection-related heat and mass transfer coefficients. The two types of fuel cell respond differently to changes in porosity and thickness of the gas diffusion layer, and the air-breathing fuel cell is more sensitive to membrane thickness.

A novel constitutive stress-strain law for compressive deformation of the gas diffusion layer

Hamed Afrasiab et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively studies the behavior of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) under compression and derives a constitutive law for the GDL through analytical, experimental, and numerical methods. Experimental tests prove the accuracy of the proposed constitutive law in capturing the material behavior of the GDL, and a modification is suggested for the simplifying assumptions made in previous studies.

Modeling the original and cyclic compression behavior of non-woven gas diffusion layers for fuel cells

Christophe Carral et al.

Summary: It is established that the compression behavior of gas diffusion layers (GDL) is dependent on the level of the mechanical stress it experienced during its lifetime. This paper presents a model able to predict the cyclic behavior of GDL, considering the existence of this compressive stress applied during the manufacturing process.

Experimental validation of pore-scale models for gas diffusion layers

Liusheng Xiao et al.

Summary: Pore-scale modeling is a powerful method for evaluating the transport properties of porous electrodes. This study validates the effectiveness of this method by comparing experimental data with modeling results. The results show that as the compression ratio increases, fiber displacement increases and fibers squeeze into nearby pores, leading to a decrease in diffusivity and permeability. Compared to empirical models, pore-scale models show better agreement with experimental data.

Microstructures and electrical conductivity properties of compressed gas diffusion layers using X-ray tomography

Summary: This study investigates the bulk resistances of commonly used commercial GDLs (carbon paper and carbon felt) during the compression process from the perspective of microstructure mechanisms. The results show that the arrangement of fibers becomes more compact during compression, leading to a rapid decline in bulk resistivity. Additionally, the fiber density and tortuosity also affect the bulk resistivity of GDLs.

Effect of direct current direction on electro-thermal damage of carbon fiber/epoxy plain woven laminates

Yousong Xue et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of the direction of direct current on the electro-thermal damage of carbon fiber/epoxy plain woven laminates. It is found that the through-thickness current reduces the composite flexural performance and induces electro-thermal damage, while the longitudinal current does not have such effects.

Effects of Cathode Gas Diffusion Layer Configuration on the Performance of Open Cathode Air-Cooled Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell

Summary: This study explores the effects of different designs of GDL on the performance of air-cooled fuel cells and finds that properly reducing the PTFE content can improve the cell performance. The sandwich-doped design performs worse compared to the uniformly doped design and causes uneven distribution of current density. The gradient-doped design, which increases the PTFE content gradually, can improve the current density while maintaining uniformity.

Summary: This study applied the pseudo-potential Lattice Boltzmann method to investigate liquid water transport in polymer electrolyte fuel cell. The research focused on the impact of hydrophilic carbon fibers in the gas diffusion layer on water saturation level and steady-state time, showing that they can lead to the formation of discontinuous water clusters. Pore-scale modeling of gas diffusion layers: Effects of compression on transport properties

Lijun Zhu et al.

Summary: A pore-scale simulation approach combining PSM and LBM was developed for studying the effects of mechanical compression on gas diffusion layer of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. It was found that compressing the GDL led to increased electric and thermal conductivities, but decreased gas diffusivity and water permeability. The in-plane transport properties were greater than the through-plane properties, with anisotropy decreasing with higher compression ratios. The study also showed that compression affected the local current density and diffusion limitations in cell performance.
