A critical review on deployment planning and risk analysis of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) toward carbon neutrality

Summary: This study provides an overview of model-based CCUS deployment pathways towards carbon neutrality, as well as the associated risks in financial, technical, environmental, health and safety aspects. The research suggests that the Golden Age of CCUS deployment is projected to be between 2040 and 2060 globally, and between 2030 and 2050 for China. The study also highlights the challenges and constraints faced by CCUS, including inadequate exploration in geologic storage capacity, high failure rate of projects, lack of financial support and market stimulus, as well as incomplete regulation framework and risk-sharing mechanism.

Summary: This study explores a non-fiscal incentive policy of granting extra electricity quotas to finance early CCS demonstration projects in China. It finds that coal-fired power plants can operate at a profit with CCS retrofitting if provided with extra electricity quotas, with the necessary quota ranging from 4709 to 7260 hours per year during the demonstration stage.

Economic feasibility analysis of carbon capture technology in steelworks based on system dynamics

Summary: In the context of China's carbon neutral goal, the Iron and Steel Industry (ISI) needs to take actions to reduce emissions. However, the application of CCUS in ISI is limited by cost and economic uncertainty, with a lack of research. This study found that with improved efficiency, government subsidies, and consumer awareness, steelworks can successfully implement carbon capture technology.

Summary: The scale of decarbonisation required to meet global emission reduction targets necessitates exploration of every available abatement technology. The study used a levelised cost of electricity approach to identify optimal market-based mechanisms for supporting CCS deployment. A carbon-constrained capacity and inertia market was determined to be the preferred pathway for the deployment of CCS technologies from an investment viewpoint.
